Defensive Average This directory contains the defensive average data for all players who played 75 or more games at a position in a given year (1988 to 1991). The files are formatted for >80 columns due to the amount of data contained. Therefore, these files may seem odd to someone viewing hem on an 80 column screen. Not to worry; the columns are all right. Also, these files are stored with a .Z suffix - when you retrieve the files, be sure to type "uncompress da*" before you view them. Defensive Average is a revised attempt to measure the defensive range and ability of fielders by measuring defensive range as a percentage of ground balls in a certain "zone" turned into outs. The abbreviations used in the files follow at the end of this readme file. PSFD.gif is a GIF file, 1600x1226x2, that shows the fielding diagram used by Project Scoresheet in determining this data. PSFDsmall.gif is a similar GIF file, 800x613x2, for those whose machines have problems handling the larger file. PSFD.readme is a textfile that lists the zones for which each fielder is responsible for any given batted ball. Obviously, this file is meant to be used in conjuntion with PSFD.gif. A great many thanks to Sherri Nichols, who originally posted these files in rec.sport.baseball and has allowed them to be filed in this archive site for everyone to read. Questions about the archives should be directed to kbos@carina.unm.edu.
