Does anyone know of any pc utility that would allow me to decompress
files archived using the UNIX COMPRESS program? I'd like to delve
into the old rec.kites archives to do some research.

Thanks,
Michael Graves

Michael,

Look for gzip.exe (I found it on a SIMTEL mirror, in file gzip124.zip).
If you want, I'll email you the compressed version.

Cheers, George

Of course this is for the .gz compressed files - there is another utility for
just the .Z files - from memory called uncomp.exe. I not sure where I got it
from, but it should be on SIMTEL as well....

If not I can send you a copy..

Graeme and others interested in this bit of compression stuff,

I think that you are mistaken; gzip will decompress .Z and .gz files. If you
use it to compress a file, it will do so with a .gz suffix. I have not used
uncomp.exe, but I have used gzip with .Z files with no problems whatsoever. It
is freeware from the GNU consortium, so it can be applied freely without guilt.

Cheers, George

Gzip reduces the size of the named files using Lempel-Ziv
coding (LZ77). Whenever possible, each file is replaced by
one with the extension .gz, while keeping the same ownership
modes, access and modification times. (The default exten-
sion is -gz for VMS, z for MSDOS, OS/2 FAT, Windows NT FAT
and Atari.) If no files are specified, or if a file name is
So you need the gzip files, available from any SIMTEL mirror. I use
oak.oakland.edu myself.
