3 October 1992 By Cliff Manis, cmanis@csoftec.csf.com This file is written for anyone who is using the LISTSERV machine who does not know how to do a 'simple' search for a word or phrase. There are many more options...... For those of you who do know how to use the search feature, you will be bored with this file. How to search for TEXT using the LISTSERV computer. Maybe you have received several messages, about your files on the LISTSERV machine, but hopefully none more helpful ! ! ! You have the capability to search for a name, word or a phrase which has ever been on LINES-L, and the VM1 computer system will reply to you only. The big thing here, it only takes about 2 minutes for the answer to be returned as a message to you. If you read the entire message - you will know how to do this procedure. Here's the way you do it ! ! ! Send a regular text message to: Listserv@vm1.nodak.edu with ONLY the following information as text of the message: //cmanis.srch JOB Echo=No Database Search DD=Rules //Rules DD * search source in LINES-L since 92/01/01 index Yes, that's all, don't send anything else, not even a .sig or howdy! Send the message to: Listserv@vm1.nodak.edu In about two minutes I received the following message back from the LISTSERV machine. It shows me the messages in the LINES-L database which have the word "source" in them. It tells me it had 4 HITS, meaning that it found 4 different messages in the LINES-L area with that word. It also tells me their Item #'s, and the subject of the message. >> From VM1.NoDak.EDU!LISTSERV Sat Oct 3 15:41:56 1992 >> Date: Sat, 3 Oct 1992 15:31:06 -0500 >> From: Revised List Processor (1.7d) >> Subject: File: "DATABASE OUTPUT" being sent to you >> To: Cliff Manis > search source in LINES-L since 92/01/01 --> Database LINES-L, 4 hits. > index Item # Date Time Recs Subject ------ ---- ---- ---- ------- 000004 92/09/30 18:50 58 Pretty printing LL report programs 000010 92/10/01 19:03 56 LifeLines Enhancements 000034 92/10/03 17:21 69 miscellaneous remarks 000035 92/10/03 14:12 68 Re: miscellaneous remarks /this is the end of the message returned to me/ When you receive a message back from VM1, telling you which messages have your information, it will have the following four message numbers. # 000005, 000010, 000034 and 000035. Those were the four messages which have the word "source" in the text. ....and the response from VM1 will include a listing of all the messages which have the word "source" in the text, then you send the exact same message again to VM1 and tell it which one you want sent back to you in this form. // job echo=no database search dd=rules //rules dd * search source in lines-l since 91/01/01 index print 000034 print 000035 Now you send the above message back to VM1, and the computer system will reply in about 2 minutes with the following message to you which includes the information you want. >> From VM1.NoDak.EDU!LISTSERV Sat Oct 3 17:41:34 1992 >> Date: Sat, 3 Oct 1992 17:29:22 -0500 >> Subject: File: "DATABASE OUTPUT" being sent to you >> To: Cliff Manis > search source in LINES-L since 92/01/01 --> Database LINES-L, 4 hits. > print 000034 >>> Item number 34, dated 92/10/03 17:21:16 -- ALL Date: Sat, 3 Oct 1992 17:21:16 +0100 Sender: LifeLines Genealogical System From: Roegel Denis Subject: miscellaneous remarks Here are some remarks I would like to share concerning LifeLines.
