I've just plonked a multisync monitor on top of my old LC630, using a VGA-to-mac monitor adapter (the old audiovision tube was getting a bit flaky). It comes up in 640x480 resolution. I've _seen_ LC630's driving multisync monitors at 800x600, but the Monitors control panel doesn't see any modes other than bog-standard VGA. I did a fresh System 7.5 install as well as an install of the HDT Tools that came with the drive. For games and interactive CD's the drive works great. When I attempt to play Audio CD's using Apple's or HDT's Audio CD Player programs no sound will come out of the speakers. Both programs recognize audio disks and behave as if they are playing them but no sound can be heard. I am chiefly baffled because the audio works great on all other types of CD's. The obvious things have been checked: Volume control; Quicktime 2.5 is loaded; Sound Manager is present; Audio CD extension is active. After the debacle of SAM 4.5, I switched to Virex. After having disks destroyed by Speed Disk, I took your advice and bought Disk Express II. I dunno that was a swell idea. I got and installed DE2 last evening. Its DiskCheck program told me in no uncertain terms that my HD directory was munged and that I should fix the problem before attempting optimization. The DE2 manual is not real clear on how to fix a problem like that. Disk First Aid might help, but it is unlikely. Try something else. The ONLY something else is Norton Disk Doctor. The new (3.5) NDD reports no problem, mon. I asked Alsoft tech support about the conundrum. The respondent (Jorg) assured me I had directory damage and should respond as in the DE2 manual. Say what? Nothing in the DE2 manual is at all helpful when NOTHING ELSE says there is a problem. If nothing else sees a problem, nothing else can fix it. The lights may be on at Alsoft, but it doesn't seem anyone is at home. This renders any diagnosis no better than a >wild guess, which is what I am about to provide... Here's another wild speculation since I had the same problem once myself a few weeks ago. (Intermittant freezes at system startup, Conflict Catcher no help.) If you're using FreePPP, try turning off "Allow applications to connect" in FreePPP Setup. With MacsBug, I found that my problem seems to have been caused by the program counter jumping to an invalid address (usually into the system heap header). I'm not sure why it was doing that. Perhaps the jGNEFilter chain was broken when FreePPP tried to install a new filter? I don't know. The funny thing is, it seems to have been related in strange some way to CC (Conflict Catcher) itself since if the hard disk "churned" a lot when CC was loading (before other INITs), then the problem would go away. If it didn't, the crash would happen once the Finder loaded. Anyway, making that change in FreePPP Setup fixed it for me. While it was being repaired I ran WORD on a removable cartridge (SyQuest). The drive was repaired and the data on it was unaltered. However, when I now run WORD from the external hard drive I often get requests to insert the removable cartridge. These requests appear whenever an operation calls for the SFDB (or WORD's Find File command). It would appear that WORD wrote some paths to this removable cartridge while the external hard drive was absent. Now that it has returned I would like things to return to the way they were. I have replaced the Preferences and Extensions (I believe to be associated with MS WORD) with copies the in use prior to the repair. I have also rebuilt the desktop, zapped the PRAM, etc. Can anyone point me towards where these paths might be written or otherwise suggest a fix. I'd rather not reinstall MS WORD if I can avoid it. I can do it once, but for all subsequent scheduled events it backs up both folders in their entirety, not just the ones that have changed in the intervening period. I received a number of suggestions and am attempting to apply them. I narrowed things down a bit. The main difficulty I was having was my pointer freezes occasionally on startups. That hasn't happened for awhile and I'm not sure what I may have done to stop that; however, It still happens whenever I try to open some attachments I received recently. They are all in Microsoft Word and were sent by someone who I know uses a PC, so they have to be automatically converted. Sometimes I can read a message flashed at the bottom of my screen just before the system crashes which mentions Fast Save. I used my Find File to look for an extension or control panel with that name, thinking I might need to increase its memory, but no luck. One thing I've learned so far is that a LOT of things can cause your pointer to freeze. Aloha, Ed Cesar cesar@lava.net ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 29 May 1997 21:32:41 -0400 From: "cesar" Subject: Pointer Freezes Hi. I'm having difficulty with frequent pointer freezes sticking in the upper left hand corner of my screen on startups. Also, sometimes it happens when I try to scroll down an attached Microsoft Word file. When I restart it usually clears up for awhile. I've done all the usual things like checking the mouse cable connection to my keyboard and the keyboard connection to the CPU, rebuilding my desktop, allocating more memory to programs I use heavily, and even did a complete clean reinstall recently. Using Conflict Catcher and disabling half of my extensions then moving them back, then disabling the other half didn't help me find the culptit either. Restarting with extensions off doesn't help because I never know when a pointer freeze is going to happen. Funny, I can't seem to find anything about this problem in either "The Macintosh Bible" or "Macs for Dummies". I'm sure someone must have experienced this problem, so I would appreciate any hints about where and what to look for. Are pointer freezes basically a memory problem or one involving extensions or control panels conflicts? Should all applications be kept only in my Applications folder? The same for control panels, extensions and Preferences? Do duplicates of applications, control panels, extensions or preference files cause this kind of problem? If so, what is the best way to find them, use the "Find File" program? What other/better methods are there? Epson wants quite a bit of $$ for its PostScript interpreter, which isn't even available yet, AFAIK. I also know there are at least two inexpensive 3rd-party programs (StyleScript and Freedom of Press) that act as PS interpreters for QD printers. Which of these would you recommend, and why? Would I be safer with Epson's solution, or does it matter? Are there other options I haven't considered? The computer I mentioned IS supported, as I checked first. That was never the issue. The Apple- produced card within the computer is no longer supported, and that change was not advertised; I call that _sneaky_. *You* are entitled to your opinion as am I. The difference is that I do not "think" anything was openly discussed anywhere at anytime where a general end-user would have been made aware of this, and from the emails I've received, I am not alone. If the authors give me permission to quote them, I will. The mention of this change was written into a tech note, and if this was so clearly communicated and documented by Mac media and by Apple, then there wouldn't be a need for the technote to begin with. Personally, I don't think you took the time to think about what I wrote about. Perhaps you're confusing the reference to the claim that the Modern Memory Manager is always enabled on the PPC. Whatever the case, I invite you to backup your claim by quoting what you read, the source, and the date of publication/release so you can have a real shot at taking the wind out of my sails. While you're at it, perhaps you'll explain why those expensive Workgroup servers fail to boot, showing "Bluets and Granola" instead of system 7.6 since that's apparently memory-manager related.
