ISN'T THAT ALWAYS THE CASE???? :-( : There was Andreas Jaenhke with his "Knubbel" - a huge inflatable with : the shape of a dragon baby, swimming shorts and two wings, very nice. In : the evening, he also started his new inflatable, a very nice whale. I saw that whale, and that kite is one of the most wonderful kites I have EVER seen! I'm glad you mentioned it, Bernhard, because I did not remember the name of the person who made it and I wanted to give credit where it was due. Anyways, the whale by Andreas Jaenhke is now one of my all-time favorite kites (hence the name of this thread). You have to watch it in flight to get the full impact - it really looks like it is swimming in the air!! The flippers undulate gracefully in the wind - it's truely wonderful to watch in flight. The detail on the kite is great, too - I hope photos of it appear in Drachen, although even though it is nice to look at in photos, you must see it fly! The dragon baby was adorable, too - Andreas is quite talented! Did he make these himself? I had the impression they were made by a group, but I could be wrong.. So, kiters, what are YOUR all-time favorite kites? You know, the ones that make you stop dead in your tracks with your mouth hanging open thinking "how did they do that?" And WHY do those kites appeal to you? My guess is, different things will appeal to different people - this could be interesting! My favorites are the kites that look "alive" in the air - Andreas' whale and Wolfgang Schimmelpfennig's cobra. Before I create any hard feelings or whatever, I just want to say that the reason why I started this thread is that I'm curious about what makes a kite 'extra special' to someone. I know there have been a few kites that REALLY appealed to me, and a whole lot more that I thought were beautiful, imaginitive, flew superbly, etc., etc. I asked Lee what his all-time favorite kites are and his eyes widened and he said "but there are so many!", which I guess may be the response from most everyone. Oh well. Maybe this was not such a good idea...
