GAME LIST A Non-Interactive List of Inform Games No Copyright (c) Brendon Wyber 1995. Ported to 1997 by Neil Brown, using Brendon's source code. Release 5 / 971015 / !Edit v1.44 CONTENTS Part One - Preamble Part Two - Summary Part Three - Released Games Part Four - Games In Development ============================================================================= PART ONE - PREAMBLE ============================================================================= This is an update of the Inform games list previously created and updated by Brendon Wyber. It contains details of all known games created with Inform, but does not claim to be complete or 100% accurate. If you find any mistakes in this document, or any omissions, please send the details to the address below. Also, authors are encouraged to send 'blurbs' for their own games; my own efforts are rather lacklustre. neil@highmount.demon.co.uk Please note, while some games only available as source code are listed, others have been omitted as being too small or insignificant. In particular I am refering to the files within the directory below. (Eg Alice Through the Looking Glass part one, by Gareth Rees, a simple tutorial file.) ftp://ftp.gmd.de/if-archive/infocom/compilers/inform5.5/examples/ For further information about Inform, try the official Inform WWW page. This is maintained by Graham Nelson, Inform's creator, and covers such topics as game design and the mechanics of the compiler. http://www.gnelson.demon.co.uk/inform.html Newcomers are advised to download the document how_to_play_these_games.txt by Gareth Rees, available in the 'if-archive/games/infocom' directory. Although a little out-of-date, it is still helpful if you are unsure how to obtain an interpreter to read the game files listed, and explains the differences between version numbers 3, 5 and 8. The document suggests that there are no version 8 games available, but this is no longer true, as you will be able to see in the summary list below. They can all be downloaded for no charge; however, one or two may have special registered versions available for a small fee, which include extra features or help. Competition entries have been incorporated into the main list - these are usually separate from the normal 'infocom' games directory, stored in either 'competition95' or 'competition96', but any updated versions will be found in 'infocom'. The most recent version is listed below. Categorisation has proved quite controversial, judging by the responses on the newsgroup rec.arts.int-fiction. Any players or authors who violently object to the categories the games have been given are welcome to contact me with a view to changing them. (Titles beginning with 'The' or 'A' are ordered by the first letter of the following word - eg 'The Path To Fortune' is filed under P for Path.) At the end of each category, there is a list of games, detailed elsewhere, that might be considered as well. **************** * ARCADE GAMES * **************** ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Title: Freefall Author: Andrew Plotkin Source: ftp://ftp.gmd.de/if-archive/games/source/inform/freefall.inf Game: ftp://ftp.gmd.de/if-archive/games/infocom/freefall.z5 A clever example of the Z-Machine being used for something it wasn't intended to do - a TETRIS-style game. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Title: Robots Author: Torbjoern Andersson Where: ftp://ftp.gmd.de/if-archive/games/infocom/robots.z5 Source: ftp://ftp.gmd.de/if-archive/infocom/compilers/inform5.5/example/ robots.inf A version of the old Zombies game (also called Daleks on some machines). ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- **************************** *COLLEGE / UNIVERSITY GAMES* **************************** ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Title: All Quiet on the Library Front An Interactive Vignette Author: Michael S. Phillips Where: ftp://ftp.gmd.de/if-archive/games/competition95/library.z5 Latest: ftp://ftp.gmd.de/if-archive/games/infocom/library.z5 Also: Humour, modern-day. As a student with an IF assignment looming, you need to get a biography out of the library - unfortunately, it's hard to get, and is for reference only... Received 5th place in the 1995 contest. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Title: Busted Psychedelic Interactive Fiction (not to be taken internally) Author: Jon Drukman Where: ftp://ftp.gmd.de/if-archive/games/infocom/busted.zip Also: Humour, modern-day. A game of high cunning and low humor. This is an entirely original game, originally written in ADVSYS but ported to Inform to increase its audience, and also to give myself some practice programming Inform. You play a university student on the verge of having a very bad day. To tell more would be to spoil the game, so just download the file (it's Version 5), plug it into your favourite Infocom interpreter and blast off. (Authors Blurb) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Title: Christminster An Interactive Conspiracy Author: Gareth Rees Source: ftp://ftp.gmd.de/if-archive/games/source/inform/minster.tar.gz Where: ftp://ftp.gmd.de/if-archive/games/infocom/minster.z5 Also: Modern-day, with fantasy elements. When your brother Malcolm sends you a telegram inviting you to visit him at Biblioll College in the ancient university town of Christminster, you imagine that the mysterious `discovery' he alludes to is nothing more than some esoteric bit of chemistry, and that you'll have a pleasant day out in beautiful surroundings. But when you get to Christminster, nothing is as you expect. Where has Malcolm vanished to? What are the unpleasant Doctor Jarboe and the positively repulsive Professor Bungay up to? And what do long-forgotten alchemical treatises have to do with the modern day? (Author's Blurb) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Title: Ditch Day Drifter Author: Michael J Roberts > Chris Markwyn Source: ftp://ftp.gmd.de/if-archive/games/source/drifter.inf A partial translation of the TADS example game with the major objects completed but the puzzles still to do. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Title: Frozen A Night at the Lab Author: Jeremy Farnham Where: ftp://ftp.gmd.de/if-archive/games/infocom/frozen.z5 Also: Fantasy, science fiction. You're working late at the computer lab in an attempt to finish the assignment which is due in very shortly. Emerging from a daydream you carelessly lapsed into, you are surprised to find that the whole world around you has frozen in time... ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Title: Night at the Computer Center An Interactive Nocturnal Chase Author: Bonni Mierzejewska Source: ftp://ftp.gmd.de/if-archive/games/source/inform/night.tgz Game: ftp://ftp.gmd.de/if-archive/games/infocom/night.z5 Also: Fantasy, modern-day, humour. Someone has run off with one of the university's printers, and you, as a computer lab technician, must retrieve it if you want to keep your job. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Title: Paper Chase Author: Chris Skapura Source: ftp://ftp.gmd.de/if-archive/games/source/inform/paperchase.inf Game: ftp://ftp.gmd.de/if-archive/games/infocom/paperchase.z5 Also: Modern-day, humour. A port of a game originally listed in a BASIC TRS-80 magazine. You want your college qualification - but red tape and unhelpful officials block your progress. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- **************************** *COMEDY / HUMOROUS / PARODY* **************************** ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Title: Bedlam An Interactive Preview Author: Michael Zey Where: ftp://ftp.gmd.de/if-archive/games/infocom/bedlam.z5 It's morning - time to drag yourself up and drive yourself over to the bar. But where are your clothes, again? And where did you leave your keys? ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Title: BSE An Interactive Epidemic Author: Chris Smith Where: ftp://ftp.gmd.de/if-archive/games/infocom/bse.z5 Also: Modern-day, fantasy and science fiction elements. Strange things have been happening in Skebdale - and not just the BSE crisis either. Rumours abound of devil-worshipping and all manner of strange happenings. Can you, as the unfortunate soul dispatched by the powers that be to investigate, unravel the mystery? Came first in the 1996 Acorn User Interactive Fiction competition. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Title: Candy An Attempt at Reliving Childhood Author: Rybread Celsius Where: ftp://ftp.gmd.de/if-archive/games/infocom/candy.z5 Also: Modern-day. An early, incomplete version. Your auntie's having a lie down upstairs, which gives you the perfect opportunity to engage on your favourite pass- time - looking for candy! ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Title: "Detective" An Interactive MiSTing Author: C.E. Forman Where: ftp://ftp.gmd.de/if-archive/games/competition95/mst3k1.z5 Latest: ftp://ftp.gmd.de/if-archive/games/infocom/mst3k1.z5 Source: ftp://ftp.gmd.de/if-archive/games/source/mst3k1.inf Also: (Loosely) Detective. "C.E. Forman immortalises the work of Matt Barringer, showing just how well a simple adventure system like AGT can be use to create truly memorable interactive fiction. <> Although the concept of this work may upset some, I found this genuinely funny. This is a re-write of a rather poor game written long ago with some witty and deliciously cruel comments by hidden reviewers. Based off a MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATRE 3000 TV show." (Brendan Wyber's comments) Was released with the source code and several documentation files. Received 4th place in the 1995 contest. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Title: I-0 the "jailbait on the interstate" game Author: Adam Cadre Where: ftp://ftp.gmd.de/if-archive/games/infocom/I-0.z5 Also: Modern-day. You're Tracy Valencia, first-year student at the reasonably prestigious University of Dorado. It's Thanksgiving Day, and you're driving home; Daddy was perfectly willing to buy you a plane ticket, but like you told him on the phone, there are much better things to spend the money on. Birthday presents, for instance -- you turn eighteen tomorrow. Besides, it's only a four-hour drive. Two and a half hours into said drive, the car starts making a noise no piece of machinery should ever make. It's the sort of sound a rhesus monkey might make being forced down a garbage disposal. Now, Dorado is nothing but scorching desert from the time you cross the coastal mountains until you reach the river, but you've got to do something about this noise. So you pull over -- and the car goes dead of its own accord. You try to start it up again, but absolutely nothing happens. You're stuck on the loneliest stretch of Interstate Zero, miles away from the last sign of civilization. It's twenty minutes to noon and the temperature's well over a hundred and twenty. It's beginning to look like Ed and Sandy Valencia's only daughter might not make it for Thanksgiving dinner... (Author's blurb) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Title: Inhumane: An Intralogic Massacre Author: Andrew Plotkin Where: ftp://ftp.gmd.de/if-archive/games/infocom/inhumane.z5 Also: Fantasy, oddity. A parody of Infocom's Infidel, converted from an old basic program written when the author was 15. To collect the treasure, you have to prove to a mystical guardian what an awful adventurer you really are. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Title: The Night of the Vampire Bunnies An Interactive Adventure Author: Jason Dyer, ported to Inform by Patrick Kellum Where: ftp://ftp.gmd.de/if-archive/games/infocom/bunny.z5 Source: ftp://ftp.gmd.de/if-archive/games/source/inform/bunny_s.zip Also: Horror. Can you save your town from the curse of the terrible vampire bunny? ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Title: Phlegm An Interactive Interactive Author: Jason Dyer Where: ftp://ftp.gmd.de/if-archive/games/competition96/phlegm/phlegm.z5 You've found it at last - the chest containing the Treasure of Phlegm. The only problem now is how to get it down from that tree and open it. The cannon may help, but where can you find gunpower, a cannon ball etc...? ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Title: Pick up the Phone Booth and Die a NyQuil nightmare Author: R. Noyes Where: ftp://ftp.gmd.de/if-archive/games/infocom/bdemo.z5 Whatever you do, don't pick up the phone booth... or you'll die. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Title: Pick up the Phone Booth and Die part 2 An interactive demo Author: R. Noyes Where: ftp://ftp.gmd.de/if-archive/games/infocom/booth2.z5 Remember, don't pick up that phone booth... but this one won't be as easily smashed as the previous one. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Title: Piece of Mind An Interactive Short Story Author: Giles Boutel Where: ftp://ftp.gmd.de/if-archive/games/competition96/piece/piece.z5 Latest: ftp://ftp.gmd.de/if-archive/games/infocom/piece_v2.z5 Also: Humour. Piece of Mind is a short, humourous work which uses the first person 'puppet' concept from Scott Adams and other early games and examines the possible causes and consequences of being so controlled by the player. On the way to insight into the protagonist's nature the player will come across some parody (x-files, cheesy SF), some poetry (real and instant), and perhaps even the odd moral dilemma. (Author's description) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Title: Promoted! Author: Mike DeSanto, ported to Inform by J Steingraeber Where: ftp://ftp.gmd.de/if-archive/games/infocom/promoted.z5 Also: Modern-day, oddity. In your e-mail in-tray, notification of your promotion! Only trouble is, everyone else has received that e-mail as well, and they are NOT going to be happy. How are you going to transfer to your new office in time without being lynched by your colleagues? Promoted! is unusual in that it emulates the style of the Rexx-adventure menu system, which the original game was written on. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Title: Ralph An Interactive Sniffing. Author: Miron Schmidt Where: ftp://ftp.gmd.de/if-archive/games/competition96/ralph/ralph.z5 Latest: ftp://ftp.gmd.de/if-archive/games/infocom/ralph.z5 Also: Modern-day, oddity. It's a dog's life, literally. Your senses are steadily failing you, and you can't for the life of you remember where you buried that bone... ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Title: Tube Trouble Author: Richard Tucker Where: ftp://ftp.gmd.de/if-archive/games/competition95/tube.z5 Also: Oddity. May yet see the light of day but not in the foreseeable future. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Working Title: Stranded Authors: Johan Berntsson, Frederik Ramsberg and Staffan Friberg Anticipated Release date: Unknown (was 'mid 1997') Stranded is currently in alpha testing, playable and winnable, but some work remains to be done. We are aiming to make it feel "alive" in that the other characters stroll around and do their jobs, and allow for fairly complicated interaction. The game is currently (March '97) a 161Kb version 5 game file, and will probably end up over 200Kb. The vocabulary is likely to be a bit more than 1000 words. Some details of its history and setting can be found at http://www-und.ida.liu.se/~d91frera/stranded.html ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Working Title: Gradeschool Armageddon Author: Charles Mangin Anticipated Release date: Unknown (was 'Summer 1997') You awake tomorrow morning and find yourself once more in the fifth grade. After your mother drops you off for school, you must survive seven class periods of pure hell, try and remember some long division and american history, and make it to your bus before it leaves at the end of the day. Its a good thing your best friend from the old days is there for comic relief and to get you into more trouble than you could possibly get into on your own. Is that the first bell or the late bell? Where's your math class? ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Working Title: BERG Author: Steven Hillen / Charlies Briscoe-Smith Anticipated Release Date: Autumn '97 As the icy water sobers you up, you begin to remember what happened. You were at the bar all evening. That was nothing unusual. You went for a late-night stroll round the deck. Again, nothing out of the ordinary. You normally take a breath of the clean, fresh arctic air before retiring to your cabin. So why are you freezing cold and soaking wet? Now you remember: the luxury transatlantic liner turned suddenly, and you staggered drunkenly to the guard rail. You must have lost your footing and toppled clumsily overboard. BERG An Interactive Adventure Copyright 1994,1995,1996 by Charles Briscoe-Smith Permission is hereby granted to everyone to redistribute this work provided no modifications are made. Release 1 / Serial number 960423 / Inform v1502 Library 5/12 In the sea The icy water stings your eyes and roars in your ears. Your dressing gown seems to be pulling you under the water. You shake your head and push the hair from your face, gasping for air. Finally struggling free of the heavy gown, you tread water and look around, shivering. You are floating in the freezing waters of the arctic ocean. The only interruption to the flat moonlit plain around you is a large, solitary iceberg some distance in front of you. It seems no-one noticed your departure. --- BERG was first published in Monitor magazine in 1987. It was written by Steven Hillen in Atari Basic, and, compared with today's Inform games, was pretty naff. Since it was presented as part of a series about programming adventure games, the parser could handle indirect objects, but the room descriptions were two-line affairs, the object descriptions were non-existent, and the puzzles were either impossible or easy. I'm now most of the way through converting the game to Inform. In the process, I've improved the text somewhat, updated the mechanics, and improved a few of the puzzles (where I've been able to think of better ones!). ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Working Title: CRASHED Author: Charles Briscoe-Smith Anticipated Release Date: The far future In this game, you are out flying with your friend Andy, who has just gained his pilot's licence. While flying over the sea, you discover that fuel has been leaking from the tank, and have to crash land on a small and (apparently) uninhabited island. While you get away with cuts and bruises in the violent landing, Andy comes off far worse. Can you save his life and effect your rescue from the island? CRASHED is in the early planning stages, and is likely to change a LOT from the synopsis above. (In fact, the synopsis above is about as far as I've got.) =============================================================================
