Subject: [*] 3D MetaBounce 1.1.1 - 3D After Dark module

3D MetaBounce v1.1.1

=A9 Copyright 1997 Adam Nash.

This program is $5 shareware.

Inspiration:
In the past several years, the processing power of the average Macintosh has
grown tremendously. This growth in capability has made it feasible for Apple to
now bundle a full set of 3D capabilities into their system software, namely
Quickdraw 3D=81. Unfortunately, unless you regularly use 3D modeling programs,
most users have had little to demo their new machines abilities.

3D MetaBounce is a screen saver to help every Mac user out there show off their
fast new machines. It is an After Dark=81 module that uses Apple's Quickdraw
3D=81 to arbitrarily bounce and spin any 3DMF model file around your screen,
wasting CPU cycles by the billion. =20

Requirements:
* PowerPC=81 based Mac OS=81 system
* Quickdraw 3D=81 1.0.6 or later
* 512K free memory

You may distribute this program any way you wish as long as you don't charge for

files almost twice as many.

* Once you choose which folder to backup into which disk, and let this
make a stuffed backup file in the disk, only by double-clicking,this
will choose files which in the original folder are modified after the
modification date of the backup file ,and replace these files in the

Subject: [*] CDIconKiller 1.4.1; disables custom icons on CD-ROMs

To suppress custom icons, install this software. This tends to speed up
the Finder by a factor of about a zillion.

To temporarily show the custom icons, hold down the Command key when
opening a folder.

It works "as is" with Apple's CD-ROM drivers (both plain vanilla and
PowerCD), some NEC drives, and Optima Technologies CD-R Access CD-ROMs;
other drives may be added using ResEdit.

It used to work on floppies and networked disks, but I removed this
feature since it could permanently (instead of temporarily) turn off the
custom icons.

CDIconKiller has its own page on the web:
http://www.kagi.com/authors/fab/cdiconk.html

New since 1.4: Added support for Optima Technologies CD-R Access.
Updated to CodeWarrior 11. Updated the docs.

EasyHTML is a Frontier (http://www.scripting.com/frontier) suite that
can be used to read in a source folder full of web page files, parse it
for special macros, and replace them with user-supplied text. Any
relative URLs in the macro expansion text that begin with a special
prefix will be modified for correctness, depending on where the file
they're being added to is located. The resulting HTML text is written
back out in a destination folder. (The original source documents remain
unmodified.) At the user's option, it can read and write only those
files that have been modified since the last build.

person responsible for organizing your family's reunion, you're sure to
make your job a great deal easier when you use this planner. I believe
that this easy to use, button driven Filemaker Pro 3.0 template is the
most useful and simple to use reunion organizer available anywhere
today. With it you can keep track of all of the reunion's attendees,
help organize and keep track of their hotel accommodations as well as

Bull-roasts or picnics, publish a simple newsletter during the event,
keep abreast of who gets official photos, what size, & how many. Plan
meal seating arrangements. Also included are "TO DO" list, "Memo" and
letter layouts. You will always know what the costs are with the budget
spreadsheet, and you can "keep a handle" on all the vendors with whom
you're doing business. The template contains a reunion date count down,
an easy-to-use "Hello my name is" label printing layout, you can even
print invoices, address labels, print several sizes of envelopes, print
directions to the events. It even contains a decision maker to help you
to decide just where to hold your reunion, plus many more time saving
layouts. All of these many useful time and labor saving features are

I Ching Connexion 2.3.1

The I Ching Connexion is an ever-changing but always consistently
interlocking graphic representation of the way the 64 hexagrams
interrelate. As such it is the key to widen and deepen the
interpretation of the outcome of a divination.

It features the translation James Legge made (published in 1882,
England) of the Imperial Edition of the I (published in 1715, China).
This alone makes the program useful for anyone interested in the I
Ching. Besides that it adds two radical new views to the ancient Book of
Changes: the Connexion and the Mediator. It also features an I Ching
clock, a presentation of the link between the I Ching and astrology. And
it allows you to calculate your natal hexagram.

The I Ching Connexion requires a Macintosh with System 7.0 or later,
32-bit Color Quickdraw and at least 256 colors or grays. It's optimised
for both PowerPC and 680x0 Macs (FAT application).

This software is distributed as shareware (save/print disabled). Please
read 'I Ching Connexion Read Me' for a bit more introductory info.

Subject: [*] New Toner Tuner Demo

Enclosed is the Toner Tuner Demo. Please check our web page at
http://www.working.com to see if this is the latest version.

Toner Tuner, one of the Working Software Printing Utilities, allows you
to save toner or ink when making draft prints. It works by printing
drafts in light gray. It works best with PostScript printers but also
works with most QuickDraw printers.

This demo works just like Tuner Tuner, but it prints obnoxious
information in the center of each "Toner-Tuned" page :-) :-). This only
happens when you turn Toner Tuner on in the Print dialog - it won't
affect your regular printouts.

To try out the demo, drag the Toner Tuner onto your System Folder, then
restart your Macintosh.

After restarting, print a document from one of your applications. Toner
Tuner adds some items to the print dialog. Use the slider bar to adjust
the print darkness, and check the "Use TT" checkbox to turn it on for
this print. The slider bar setting is remembered between prints.

Shortcut: hold the Option key when you press Return, or click Print, to
turn Toner Tuner on.

Secret Stuff for Advanced Users: Use ResEdit to edit the "TTPf"
resource in Toner Tuner to set the "Use TT" checkbox default to on. The
installer for the real product allows this as an option.

* Printer Compatibility

Toner Tuner works with most printers, but some printers will not respond
to Toner Tuner's command to lighten their printouts.

HP DeskWriter owners must use version 2.2 of the DeskWriter driver
software on black and white DeskWriters. Later versions of the black
and white DeskWriter, and all versions of the color DeskWriter do not
dim their printouts.

Verbs & Nouns 1.5.6 - The program lets you create a database of verbs or
nouns in a foreign language. You can easily construct the inflection
patterns for words that are regular. You can include other information
about each word, such as a translation, grammar characteristics,
comments, etc. in a convenient form. Comments are useful for storing

can use different fonts and styles in the comment box. The facility for
merging databases makes it easy to share comments with other users. The
program has an exercise window. It automatically generates exercises to

Subject: Q: Pinnacle Tahoe 230 Mb MO drive driver

Hi everyone!

Does anybody know which driver to use for the Pinnacle Tahoe 230 Mb MO
drive? I bought one second hand (with driver version 3.03 supplied on
installation disc) to replace my Zip drive (because our lab is going for
MO drives) and I have nothing but trouble - and I hope and pray that it
is just a driver problem. Pinnacles web site doesn't say anything and so
far I haven't got a reply to my query about which driver to use.

System: Performa 5200 CD/TV with System 7.5.5.
SCSI chain consisting of Zip, then Tahoe 230 (terminated)

The symptoms: Iomega driver active since the MO driver doesn't properly
recognise the Zip (suddenly DOS format names on Zip) ... works fine for a
week ... tried to unstuff an archive ... got "Data I/O error" ... Norton
Utilities 3.2 say "Serious problem - cannot repair" ... files / folders
disappear ... Apple first aid repairs the disc ... Norton gives clean bill
of health ... missing files (all?) recovered ... transfer files to Zip ... try
formatting the MO ... initialisation fails ... Norton says "Serious problems
- cannot repair" ... Apple first aid says "Cannot repair" ... cannot
initialise from either desktop, Apple first aid, Pinnacle formater,
Rapid Trek formatter (used for MO drives in lab), HDT (urgently borrowed
from a friend) ... given up on disc

Mary Jo,

Not sure what system you are using or whether the SW2400 is Appletalk
capable, things to check:

1) Appletalk
Have you checked how Appletalk is setup? Is Appletalk on? If on, is
it set for the printer port (system 7.5+).

2) Is some other application using the port the printer is plugged into?
FAX programs, AppleTalk Remote, etc. are good possibilities.

3) You may have a bad cable, not completely unheard of.

Good Luck,

Hi Folks.
I need software (prefer shareware or freeware) to do 2 things: encrypt
email messages and to encrypt or lock individual folders and files on my
mac. Can someone please recommend the best software for this, with ease of
use being ranked fairly high up the scale?

Many thanks.

You can use

- Snooper (Maxa Corp.)
- MacCheck (Apple Computer)
- Display Service Utility (Apple Service Utility)
- MacUser Screen Test (Ziff-Davis)

You can download at least *MacUser Screen Test* from Ziff-Davis site....

Subject: Nudesign 4x CDROM drive does not work with system 7.6.x

I sent the question below yesterday and did not see it posted in today's
digest. I hope it is just a backlog. With nothing better to do I did some
testing.

It appears that upgrading to system 7.6 or 7.6.1 is the problem. The cd
drive will not boot on powerbooks (540C or 5300) or on a Quadra 650. What
to do? These drives were bought at Fry's and no one there seems to know
how to contact Nudesign. Is anyone else out there having problems with
System 7.6 upgrades. Is there some kind of support group? Between this
and my PC ethernet card this is turning out to be the most problematic
upgrade we have done so far. Apple so far is directing me back to the
third party people.

Any help or solace will be greatly appreciated.

Subject: Program that allows internal PB modem to act like external modem?

Hi...

Some time ago i downloaded a demo (i think it was time-delayed) of a
program that, when run on a PowerBook with an internal modem (be it a
PCMCIA card or otherwise), would route any modem activity to/from the
serial port of the PowerBook.

That is to say, it let you use your PowerBook w/ an internal modem (via a
8-pin DIN cable) act as a regular modem for say, your Desktop Macintosh.

Mind you, this wasn't via the network (a la Stalker's PortShare), but
via a serial cable. The thing is, if it's serial, that means i could
use my PCMCIA modem in my PowerBook to connect up (*gasp*) a Wintel
box as well.

Any ideas or pointers would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Subject: Specifications for the Stereo Audio Out Plug in the 7100/80

Hi there! I've been having troubles with obtaining stereo sound coming out
of my PowerMac 7100/80 to an external amplifier.

The 7100/80 Stereo Audio Out Port calls for a stereo minijack plug and it
seems that the ones I have tried do not have the right specs, because all I
get is one channel of sound coming out from one of the external speakers
and the other channel coming out from the Mac built-in speaker...

I have tried many sources, including online Mac-based malls, the Cyberian
Outpost, BottomLine, etc. -- no one seems to carry this item, or care to
give any clues as where to find it. The Manual says that one could use any
minijack, such as those used in tape systems earphones, but that has not
been my experience...

I am really in need of this information because I use the 7100/80 to give
professional multimedia presentations, where stereo sound is called for.

HELP!...

Thank you in advance.

PCMCIA Ethernet Cards

I encountered a similar problem of inability to recognize the PC Card upon
an upgrade of my Powerbook 190cs from 7.5.5 to 7.6 with a Megahertz
Cruisecard.

After calling Megahertz, they did a firmware upgrade to the card. Such a
change may be necessary for your modem also?

One last thought, the PC Card extensions of 7.5.5 and 7.6 should support
most compliant devices without additional drivers. Appletalk and TCP/IP
control panels should show something like Alternate Ethernet in the
settings list. At least that is what happens now for me. Also the card
should show up on the dekstop of course.

Ultimately though, you may need to cough up money for a better quality
product if you have had persistant problems with this off brand. I will
only say that my experience with Megahertz has been outstanding and their
warranty and tech support is better than anyone I've ever dealt with, in
minutes my call was answered and dispatched to someone who picked up the
phone and said "Hi, is this Erik?, I hear you are having problems w/ a
Powerbook 190..." Plus, for the first time in my life, I talked to a tech
support person who actually knew what I was talking about and left me
feeling like returning the card would be useful even though it was working
in other computers.

Subject: URGENT!! Being converted to a Windows user

Hello,

Here's the situation. I work for a small software company. The
company is moving from being a Unix software provider to being
almost exclusively Windows based. The fact is, that is where
our customers are.

I work in documentation, with another fellow. We are the only
two Mac users in the company. Everyone else uses PCs or workstations.
Our Macs are over 3 years old and starting to show their age. (I have
a Q650, he has an LC475) Some tasks just take ages to complete.

I must say I am envious of the developers who have PentiumPro 180
machines. They are really fast. Anyway, below is the actual transcript
of an email conversation I had with my boss.

>> We now have the distinction
>> of having the slowest machines in the company, bar none.
>> The ones we have are really starting to show their lack of speed,
>> particularly now that we are working with color images.

Look at the response. I need some arguments to keep the Macs. What good
Mac/PC solutions are out there. I know Apple has a couple of machines with
Intel cards inside. Has anyone used any of these. Please note. I need
a VERY high level of PC compatability--e.g. Ability to run Microsoft
Visual C++ and run ActiveX controls. Is there anyone out there in my
situation who can offer advice?

Thanks for the help. I need answers quickly. I am meeting with him on Monday.
Please reply directly to me if you can.

A trip to my trusty Claris Translators folder (2nd time this digest)
revealed Word 5, and RTF, but no Word 6! I guess some were in my
ClarisWorks 4 package and some from MacLink Plus (not too sure from
whence they came, as I tend to scour any demos I can for other Claris
Translators!)

So, you could either ask your users to save as RTF out of Word, or save
as Word 5, but both will entail some loss of formatting and embedded
stuff, I'd guess <sigh>
