I have installed the new Eudora 5, free version with ads. Seems to be
fine except-seems as if every time I am receiving mail automatically
(set for 20 minutes), everything seems to freeze. No matter what it
is that I am doing, checking mail, writing mail or any other
application-nothing moves until all my mail has been received. Is
there anything that can be done to allow the mail to be received in
the background without disturbing other work being done?
Thanks in advance to all who respond.

That recent message from <abrody@smart.net> regarding NUM is misleading
to say the least.

My wife is running 8.1 and she uses NUM 3.5.2 literally every night
before shutting down with absolutely no problems and excellent results.

I am running 8.5.1 and use NUM 4.0.3 literally every night before
shutting down with absolutely no problems and excellent results.

Norton DD has saved our rears on numerous occasions. We wouldn't be
without it.

To use this list to malign Norton on the basis of anecdotal and personal
experience that may have had nothing whatever to do with the use of
Norton is irresponsible and unconscionable.

The usual disclaimers apply. I have no connection w/Norton other than
being a very satisfied user.

Subject: [*] MultiMode 3.7.2

MultiMode allows your Macintosh to decode and transmit several different
modes of non-voice communication often heard on shortwave radio.

In the past, dedicated hardware, often costing hundreds or thousands of
dollars, was necessary to demodulate and decode this transmissions. Today,
you can use the processing power of your Macintosh to decode and display
these modes, without any additional hardware, other than your Mac and a
radio.

MultiMode supports the following modes:

       Morse Code (CW)
       RTTY (Baudot)
       ASCII
       SITOR-A
       SITOR-B / FEC / NAVTEX

Subject: [Q] netscape slowdown

Lately when I surf the net, after visiting 10-20 sites the next site I go to
refuses to load. If I disconnect and reconnect it still won't load. But if I
quit netscape and restart while still connected that site will load and I
can surf for another 10-20 sites before it happens again. Obviously netscape
is running out of room in one of its cache files and by quitting it resets.
I remember reading about a year ago of others having a similar problem and a
simple solution. Does anybody know the cure?

Subject: A weird folder inside System

Hello Jose,

Oops! dangerous stuff going on there... I recommend an immediate backup of all your files, as the duplicate folder indicates that the directories on your harddrive have gone haywire. (but I guess youd already figured that one out..) Be sure to check the backup for completeness, as most backup applications will crash upon encountering a duplicate or damaged directory record- or just plain skip them (...). A backup to another harddrive is a litle more sure, as the Finder will always inform you if a file/folder couldnt be read or written.

Whats going on? It seems that there is a problem with the directories of your disk.
The weird folder is probably a duplicate directory record.

ResEdit cant get info on this folder because its not actrually a folder, its just a duplicate record of an existing folder. Youd need something like Nortons Disk Editor to fix this, but that would be terribly complicated- youd need a Symantec tech support person to guide you through there.

To solve this the rough way Id move everything from the System Folder to a new folder (name it System Folder New or something like that), than create a folder on the desktop with the name System Folder (i.e. the exact same name as your actual, previously inhabited-and still haunted-System Folder). Be prepared for the worst (crash/freeze/disk becoming unreadable/panic striking) and have an alternative startup disk handy. (a System CD, or an external Hardrive) Preferrably assign this alternatiove startuyp disk as the startup disk using the Startup Disk control panel. Then move the new, clean, empty System Folder folder from the desktop onto your startup disk, and let the Finder replace the old, haunted System Folder.
The Finder will (try to) replace the haunted folder AND the duplicate record with the new folder. You can safely remove this folder when the Finder is done. Now you should be able to fix the disk with Disk First Aid, TechTool, Norton or whatever. Alsofts DiskWarrior seems to do a pretty good job on restoring damaged directories.
Check your System Folder->Extensions Folder for a file named ObjectSupportLib if you are running Mac OS 8 or newer. This library seems to sometimes cause these kind of problems.

Hope this helps,

Wouter Meulensteen

Sounds complicated but it isnt.

Subject: HP 6MP LaserJet connecting via a USB adapter.

Dear Macsters,

I have a G3 Powerbook (Lombard) that I woudl liek to use with my Hewlett
Packard 6MP LaserJet printer.

Does anyone have experience with connecting one to a USB Mac using a
serial-USB adapter. I have looked into some but there seem to be hidden
compatibility problems. Does KeySpans adapter or Asante's work?

Otherwise what are other options?

Thanks in advance,

Subject: Netscape 4.73/Epson 740i/ EpsonShare 1.62 printer font size

I paid for the EpsonShare 1.62 package to run the Epson 740i from my
6300, running Mac OS 8.6. The 6300 is connected to a hub that has a cable
modem in its uplink port.

In printing from Netscape 4.73, I have to reset the font size to 36 point
to get printouts from Netscape prints to be at least 12 point in size. If
the Netscape print font preferences are set for 10-12 point font size, then
the prints come out extremely small- a page of print is ~ 2x3 inches. My
bifocals don't help here!!! I have installed EpsonShare 1.62 according tt
instructions from the shareware writer.

If instead one prints out from ANY other application, the Epson 740i prints
out OK.

What must I do to correct this? I have attempted to send a question to
Gerard Ceccaldi <ceccaldi@ses.fr> - who wrote epsonshare but his ISP
rejects all my questions .

HELP!
Thanks in advance.

Well, there are Norton Utilities and TechTool Pro, both of which are
about $100.

There's a bundle deal at Outpost of Retrospect, Spring Cleaning, and
Norton Utilities for $99; you'd still be spending $100, but your unit
cost would go down.

There may be an upgrade rebate still available for Norton Utilities,
which would drop your cost further.

Or there's this; maybe it would work.
