3d Brick Bash! version: 1.3.1

This shareware game is a 3d version of the classic break-out game. It
requires Color Quickdraw and a 68020 processor. It runs well on most Macs,
with the option to run in fewer colors to get full performance on older
machines.

This is a maintainance release, fixing uneven performance running on AV Mac's.
Replaces all earlier versions, such as 3dBrick.* and 3dBrickBash1.1.1.sit.hqx.

(OK to include it on commercially available CD-ROM of the archives.)

Subject: [*] Better Amazon Sherlock plug-ins 1.1 update

Better Amazon.com plug-ins for Apple's Sherlock feature in Mac OS 8.5.
Version 1.1 corrects the URL for downloading the latest version.

Enclosed are two Sherlock plug-ins for searching Amazon.com books and
music. These were created because any of the existing Amazon plug-ins I've
tried simply don't work correctly.

Generic Amazon plug-ins only search for books, not music, so I created a
separate music search. Shortly after creating this plug-in, another amazon
music plug-in turned up at a popular web site. In testing, I found that the
other book and music plug-ins did not return the full list of hits. In one
instance, a music search only returned two items where my music plug-in
returned over twenty! In addition, the other plug-ins included a separate
search for classical music which didn't work at all because it was
searching the books database. My single music plug-in correctly searches
both the popular and classical music databases.

that application's Comments window.

Requirements: AppleScript 1.1 or better, the Auto-Type and Jon's
Commands osaxen (available on Info-Mac).
This script requires that the Comments window in GraphicConverter be
open and that the application dialog windows be pointed to an
unlocked volume (as the changed-file bullet will automatically appear).
You can use the ScriptEditor to change the version

I also recommend OSA Menu by Leonard Rosenthal, as it makes running

Subject: [*] Deskpop 1.0.5

What does "Deskpop" do?
Deskpop is a Control Strip module which lists all volumes, folders and
files currently on the Mac's desktop.
This is especially useful for the (hopefully short) time the desktop is
cluttered.
Folders are displayed with the underline style.
Volumes (a.k.a. Disks) are displayed with the bold bold+underline style.
The Trash is displayed with the bold style.

Selecting an item from the Deskpop menu will open it.
Holding down the Control+Option keys will reveal it in the Finder.
Holding down the Control+Shift keys will move the selected item to the
Trash.
If the selected item is a volume, Control+Shift+selecting will unmount it
and eject it, if it's ejectable.
These key combinations can be modified using the "Deskpop Settings"
dialog, which is accessible from the Deskpop menu item with the same name.

Requirements
Requires Mac OS 7.1 or better, and scriptable Finder (which is integrated
into Mac OS 7.5 and better, I believe).

For more information, please read the Release Notes enclosed.

Thanks,
Reuven Sherwin

Subject: [*] Desktop Screenshots 1.0

The Mac has always had the ability to capture the screen to a picture
file via COMMAND-SHIFT-3 and with System 8 also via COMMAND-SHIFT-4. They
work great but have the annoying habit of saving the screenshots at the
top level of the hard drive. With a little research I discovered that
there is in fact a way to specify where the pictures are saved and thus
was born Desktop Screenshots. A tiny extension that redirects those
picture files right to the desktop for easy access.

Desktop Screenshots uses an undocumented feature of the standard system
screen capture code. This feature appears to be available starting with
at least System 7.6.1. Earlier system versions might work too but I
haven't tested them. No system software modifications are made so it
won't hurt anything to try it out, it will either work or not.

Desktop Screenshots is FREEWARE (share and enjoy.)

Subject: [*] Font Gander Pro 1.5.5.sit

Font Gander Pro is the world's handiest font browser. Allows you to view
and print font samples without first installing the fonts. With
Drag-and-Drop simplicity, you can open and print whole folders or disks
full of fonts at one time. Renders TrueTypes and Type-1's at high
resolution, and works with any printer. Includes the Gander Quill editor -
as friendly as any draw program - which allows you to design your own
layouts featuring up to 99 fonts per page. This is the ONLY font sampler
program that gives you these features.

Version 1.5.5 uses new print routines for improved compatibility with a
broader array of printers. A new "Print Options" item allows you to turn
this off and use the old routines if they worked okay for you (they still
pose less risk of choking the printer). Also includes all the recent fixes
to Gander Quill.

numerous internet search engines. The software is quick, compact, and
PPC native.

configured. Internet Config 2.0 is included in this distribution package.

How does it work?
Operation of Holmes is simple. Enter some text to search for, select

Icon Tools, a CNET/Download.com Top Pick and Most Popular item, is an
extremely innovative tool which lets users personalize their desktops by
modifying any icon in many creative ways.

With a single click (actually, a control-click), Icon Tools can copy,

movies of any kind!

Version 1.6 not only takes advantage of the new 32-bit icons under Mac OS
8.5, but it also sports an editor for 8-bit icon masks! You will now be
able to create your own translucent icons and make anti-aliased or shaded

unique Icon Stamps feature: instantly mark your documents and applications
with tags, symbols, markers, labels, widgets of any kind - more than a
hundred are included in the package, but you can make your own stamps too!

Even on crowded hard disks and cluttered desktops, Icon Tools will let
you identify important files at a glance. Mark documents to be printed with
a small printer stamp, files to be e-mailed with an e-mail symbol, tear
apart the icons of obsolete documents... the possibilities are endless.

Icon Tools also lets users easily add Icon Frames to any existing icon.
Adding backgrounds or making folder and disk icons for your favorite
applications is easier than ever. Included are frames for making custom
CD-ROM or Zip disk icons with no effort!

MacDNS Log Converter is an applescript witch transforms log files from
MacDNS so they can easily be edited within a spreadsheet software.

I had to conduct a survey to see which sites are most accessed from within
our company and found out that MacDNS log files contains all the required
information, but are difficult to read. As I found no analysis software
that can read MacDNS format, I wrote this script.

Basically, this script extracts from the log file dropped on it the date,
time, address of the requester and name of the requested site for each
request, then writes it into a new text file, with basic formatting.
Importing this new file in a spreadsheet (like Excel) is then just a matter
of dropping the file onto Excel's icon.

MacDNS Log Converter is free, edit it, modify it as you like -and send me a
copy.

MultiMode 1.2.1 is an application which allows your Macintosh to decode
several different modes of non-voice communication often heard on shortwave
radio.

MultiMode allows you to decode and display morse code, RTTY, fax, and many
other modes on your Mac, without any extra hardware! MultiMode now also
allows you to send morse code.

In the past, dedicated hardware, often costing hundreds or thousands of
dollars, was necessary to demodulate and decode this transmissions. Today,
you can use the processing power of your Macintosh to decode and display
these modes, without any hardware.

MultiMode decodes the following signals:

       Morse Code (CW)
       RTTY (Baudot)
       ASCII
       SITOR-A
       SITOR-B / FEC / NAVTEX

OnScreen Particle Physics simulates a particle-detection chamber, the
device used by researchers at facilities such as Fermilab. By enabling
students to carry out simulated experiments, it presents modern physics
as a human activity, not just a set of facts. The software is mainly
aimed at teachers wanting to teach modern physics from a "how we know"
perspective, but it is well suited to individual study. No advanced
mathematics required. A particle chamber appears on the screen in 3D
perspective. Particle decay events, generated in accordance with the real
physics, appear as charged-particle tracks, curved by the simulated
magnetic field. Users can rotate the chamber to view tracks from
different perspectives and can re-play the event, thus obtaining a vivid
picture of it. On-screen tools allow users to solve the puzzle of
particle identification exactly as real particle physicists do.
Trackmaker, a gamelike, interactive simulation of the motion of a charged
particle in a magnetic field is included. This demo version limits user
to a single particle event to observe and analyze, but the toolset its
complete. Trackmaker is limited to three particles per session. Runs on
any Mac with 68020 or greater and system 7.0 or greater.

Subject: [*] respondsrc - preemptive multitasking w/source code

This package contains source code for Respond!

Respond! is a control panel that brings a limited form of preemptive
multitasking to the Macintosh right now. And it runs on any Mac, 68k or
PowerPC, with System 7.0 or later. No more waiting for MacOS X or
Rhapsody. Even in Mac OS 8, if you hold down a menu in the Finder,
processes will not continue in the background. With Respond!, you can be
holding down a menu (particularly useful with Sticky Menus in Mac OS 8), or
clicking in a the zoom or close boxes (or the WindowShade collapse box in
Mac OS 8), or dragging a window or the thumb of a scroll bar, and processes
will continue in the background.

Respond! includes the option to use Live Window drag. When this option is
turned on, the full window, not just the outline, will be dragged, and both
foreground and background processing will continue, meaning the window
itself will be updated as its being dragged around! For example, you can
drag around an mp3 player window and watch as it continues playing and
updating the time counter while moving.

SwitchRes is an extension that allows you to control the resolutions
of all your displays. A Control Panel is joined, which lets you change
its preferences, and a Control Strip Module and a Contextual Menu
extension are bundled. You can change all your resolutions with just
one mouse click on the Finder desktop, or just by pressing one key.

It also allows you to:
----------------------

* use *all* available resolutions of your video cards, not only those
  the MacOS choose for you
* automatically switch resolution and color depth of all monitors when
launching an application, and restore your settings when quitting
* position the desktop icons where you want, at every resolution change
  and at startup
* configure the menus by choosing which resolutions and what bitdepths
will be displayed (Control Strip Module menu, Contextual Menu)

and a lot of other features...

SwitchRes requires MacOS 8, and a multisync monitor may be useful...
Of course, SwitchRes works fine under MacOS 8.5
It is distributed as a $9 shareware, but you can try the application
for 7 days.

What is new in version 1.5.2:
-----------------------------

Version 1.5.2 corrects some bugs, especially the one that prevented
the last used resolution to be applied again after a restart. It should
also be more stable at startup, and shouldn't crash any more when using
an unknown display or video card.

The main new feature is its ability to change the monitor where the
menu bar is shown (in a multiple monitor environment) from within the
control strip, the menu bar or the contextual menu.

SwitchRes now displays the correct texts in the Japanese version, uses
32 bits icons under MacOS 8.5 and shows a proxy icon in the window
title bar.

You can read the 'Read Me' file for a more complete description of all
little bugs that have been corrected.

Subject: [*] Twistory 1.2 - History Browser

"Twistory" is a history browser. It displays the lifetimes and
travels of historical figures, and dates and locations of historical
events. It is a tool for keeping track of when and where things happened,
and their relationships to each other. A resource of over 1600 people,
events and places is included. The database has an open text format, so
that more historical information can be added by any user. A complete
description of the file format is included.

Version 1.2 has user-defined "People" and "Events" menus, including
full control over occupation and event type definitions and their icons.
It now also has a "Find" window. It also fixes some inconsistencies that
earlier versions had in displaying voyages on the map.

The two main windows are the time-line window, which shows lives and
events against a variable time scale, and the map window, which shows
people and events in their geographic locations during an interval of time.
There is also a genealogy window which shows the ancestors and descendants
of the selected person, and an info window which shows additional details
about the person or event. A "This Day in History" window lists all
milestones occurring on a particular day of the year.

Twistory is not a substitute for proper reading about and research
into a historical period. It is meant to provide a way to keep track of
the multitude of different peoples, dynasties, empires and developments
throughout history. It is intended to answer questions like, "What else
was happening in the world at that time?" and "Did A live at the same time
as B, or before?" It is intended to provide the user with the "big
picture."

Twistory is a FAT binary, and requires system 7. It uses about 4.5 Mb
of disk space, and needs about 2 Mb of RAM to run comfortably. With a
large monitor or with several windows open, 4 Mb is better.

Twistory is $10 (US or CAN) shareware. You may evaluate it for free.
If you use it regularly, keep it for more than one month, or use it for
presentation to a group, I would enjoy getting a little something for it.
If you feel so obliged, you may send the payment to the address included
with the program. If you desire support, please send your e-mail address

Ultimate Blackjack is designed to provide the feel of a gambling casino with
realistic card dealing at a table with six players whose chips move across the
table when hands are won or lost. The user can learn to play Blackjack better,
by having a hint window displayed if an incorrect play is made, or having the
program deal only specific types of hands, like pairs or soft hands, so these
can be practiced directly. Card counting can also be practiced.

Going beyond the standard casino games, Ultimate Blackjack can show how much
money a particular strategy will win (or lose) in Las Vegas, and even draws a
histogram showing the distribution of outcomes. The statistical package tracks
the payoff on each card combination to understand the best play. You can even
experiment with two artificial intelligence routines, the genetic algorithm
and learning agents, to see if a computer can learn to play Blackjack. Good
Luck!

Ultimate Blackjack is shareware with a fee of $10 and includes a 46 page
manual. Version 2.0 allows a larger game window to be displayed to match the
monitor size. Also, the wagering techniques available for simulating now
include card counting and hot streaks. In addition, more variations on casino
