Subject: [Q] Font Utility

I've tried MenuFonts, which almost does what I want; Adobe Type Reunion, which
doesn't do it at all; and looked at the demo for TypeTamer, which doesn't look
like what I want either, so now I'll put the question out to you people...

Is there a font utility out there anywhere that will allow me to decide what
fonts show up in my font menu (I've got tons) and allow me do put the rest of
them in groups that I can name *without them having some common first
character*? Currently MenuFonts (which is the best so far) lets me put all
my unused fonts in a group called Unused provided that I change all their
names so they begin with "Unused". I just want to be able to define groups
like "Extra A-F", "Extra G-M", etc and put the fonts in them *without* having
to change the name of the font to "Extra A-F Braille".

Anyone know of anything like that?

Thanks!

I was wondering If anyone has come across a plug in that will allow 030
processors to play real audio on the net. 2.0 was fine, but in the interest
in "more, better, faster", I guess I have been left behind.

Also interested in any experience you mac web designers have had with
trying to loop real audio encoded files for the web, and getting real audio
files to play on your site without having a dialogue box come up?

I am also curious about what causes "catalog b-tree" and "Master directory
block errors" on the mac, for you macbrainiaks out there? Is there certain
specific things that produce these kinds of errors?

Thanks for the insight!

Subject: ATM 4.0

Am I really the only person having problems with Adobe Type Manager v4.0
on two monitors? I have an Apple Portrait display and a Sony colour
monitor, both hooked up to my Mac Q650. The anti-aliasing on ATM work
perfectly most of the time. However, when I run a program that changes
the screen screen depth or CLUT, such as Photoshop or (worst culprit) MS
Bookshelf (94), type on the greyscale monitor (but not the colour
monitor) comes out very jaggy. It doesn't just lack the anti-aliasing --
it looks worse than if I didn't have ATM installed at all.
I can get rid of the jaggies by redrawing the affected window (eg with
window-shade). But when I scroll the text in the window, the new text
that appears is jaggy.
This problem persists even after I quit from the app that caused it.
Both screens are set to 256 colours (the best I can do without adding
more VRAM).
I've checked all the usual places for a solution to this problem.

Hello,
I have to get a printer for my Mom's Perf. 600CD. The best deals that I can
find for a new color inkjet are between a HP 600 for about $190 or a Apple
SW 1500 for about $200 after the $50 rebate. So what's everybody's opinion?
Which is the better printer for about the same money. Myself, I just

Subject: External apple floppy drives

Gee, I've had a lot of input lately :o)

I have a delimma. My IIci has a bit of a design flaw, just like most of
them. The cooling fan draws most of of it's air through the floppy drive
bay. This became a problem last year, when the guts of the drive became so
plastered with stuff the drive ceased to function in any way. It was
necessary (so the local apple dealer said) to replace the whole drive. I
was charged somewhere near 200 or so for parts andlabor.

Anyway, I think it's starting to happen again. A disk formmatted on
another mac takes some time to come up. Sometimes a format completes but
then it is necessarry to format it on a different machine.

I hAve tried cleaning kits, to no avail. What I am looking for is 1 (or
more preferably 2) external superdrives to attach to the machine. It's one
of the cool ones that has the external floppy port. I have looked
everywhere, placed ads in the local paper, and cannot find one anywhere.
Does anyone know of any place that still sells these? or perhaps a case
>From one place and the drive from somewhere else?

Thanks....

I am having the same problem. Here's one tip, that improved the situation
for me, but did not solve it completely:

Open your PowerBook control panel. Select the "Custom" switch, while holding
down the Option key. This will reveal a normally hidden selection:

"Allow processor cycling - more battery savings."

You should DESELECT this option.

If you get other helpful suggestions, I would appreciate your letting me
know. Thank you and good luck.

I mean, like for children's educational games with animation & such? Of
course, I know that Marathon is out of the question because I tried it on a

Subject: Iomega Problems

Hello fellow Iomega users,

I've been a participant in the Iomega game from day one. I am an sys. admin
for a small catalog company. I have 5 servers that back up to Jaz drives
everyday! I've had problems with ZIP and JAZ drives and their carts. I have
trusted my valuable information on both drives and I wonder sometimes.

Well,... it happened... one day I came to work and one of my drives was
fried. I made the calls and got hung up on. I _did_ get through...believe
it. I called 800.456.5522 and then called 801.778.1000 real early in the
morning<est> and spoke to tech. I ended up sending the drive and two carts
that were damaged in the process. Within a week or so... got the drive and
carts back.

Don't trust the Iomega Jazz Drives. If you hear strange noises... do _not_
put your sacred disks in... do not try to eject. Power the unit down <let
it sleep>and send it back! Call and get the RMA and U.P.S. it. These drives
eat data!!!!

Zip disks die all the time. An old version of Norton <2.0 - I think> has
saved me countless times. If a disk goes bad, try norton <old version> and
save your data onto another disk or hard drive.. reformat <wipe it> the zip
disk or trash it.

I hope I have been helpful. Remember _always_ backup and backup on multiple
disks.

Subject: Maxtech Modem

Hi,
I have quite a lot of experience hooking up Macs on the Internet with
different modems. However, I have encountered a problem modem. I tried
different initialization strings on a Maxtech modem & I can't achieve a
high speed connection. I tried switching the cable with an U.S. Robotics
hardware handshaking cable & I still have a problem. When I first dial the
ISP, the HS light comes on. I don't think that it should come on at that
point. Then, when it connects the HS light goes out & I have a connection
that either crawls along or doesn't work at all. I had no trouble using an
U. S. Robotics modem with this Power Mac. Maxtech says to use a null modem
cable. Whaaa? Why would it take a null modem cable when every other modem
that I know of needs a hardware handshaking cable. (No cable shipped with
the modem) I can find no Mac-specific null modem cable in my catalogs but I
found a posting on Usenet about making a null modem cable using 2 different
cables along with a null modem cable. But I think that is for a LAN
connection. Oh, brother. I don't think that this modem is worth making a
custom cable for, especially when I have no idea if it will work or not.
Does anybody have any input on this modem from hell?

hi folks!

I have two unrelated questions...

1) I recently installed Microsoft Internet Explorer version 2.1, in order
to test it out. How do I change my default browser from Netscape to IE2.1,
so that when I click on a URL, IE2.1 will start instead of Netscape... I
really want to KEEP Netscape, though, as I'm only testing IE... I am
positive I've seen a setting for changing my default browser, but for the
life of me, I can't remember where... can anybody help? this should be an
easy one for someone with a less cluttered mind than mine! :)

2) also, a Usenet question... it seems that Netscape's news reader is the
only Usenet news reader which views binaries live on screen, without having
to "extract" them to another file.... is there another newsreader which
does this? It seems a bit much to run Netscape for this purpose...

thanks much!

Subject: PowerBook 5xx 2.5" SCSI Drive Replacement Advice Needed

I need to replace the dead 2.5" internal SCSI hard drive in my PowerBook
520C.

After several months of hapless searching, I finally located a CompUSA
dealer that will sell me a an Apple brand service replacement 1gb drive
[part#-6611298] for $630 plus $70 installation with a 90 day warranty from
Apple.

It appears that I can also buy a third party drive that is faster or
bigger or cheaper from other sources. I also know how to install such a
drive myself.

What I need to know is this-

1- Is it true that the Apple drive is an IBM IDE drive that has been
retrofitted with a SCSI controller card?

2- If #1 above is true, how does this drive compare in performance to a
true SCSI drive?

3- What are the specifications for this Apple drive?

4- Is this the only available solution from Apple?

5- Is there a better solution available from someone else?

6- Presuming that the computer is now past warranty, and that a drive I
install myself lasts longer than 90 days before breaking, is it necessary
to have a dealer [who is several hundred miles away] install the drive in
order to get future service/support [even at my expense] from Apple
PowerBook repair?

7- Is getting an Apple drive now, any or my best guarantee of being able
to get a replacement drive in the future?

[An explanation is due here.]

When I bought my PowerBook, the largest available stock drive was 240mb.
The largest available 2.5" upgrade drive was 500mb. There were no Apple
drives available, so my dealer installed drive from Quantum [who
manufactured the Apple drive].

Three months ago, I sent my PowerBook in for warranty repair. Before I
mailed it, the drive was working. By the time it arrived at PowerBook
repair, the drive was dead.

Had it been an Apple drive, Apple would have repaired/replaced it.

As it was not an Apple drive, they sent me elsewhere--except there was no
elsewhere.

My original dealer had no replacement drives. Neither did Quantum. It
appears that Apple was the only buyer for 2.5" SCSI drives. When they
switched to IDE drives for future PowerBooks, the drive manufacturers
stopped making them and the supply sold out.

I called all the dealers/distributors/manufacturers/mail order houses I
could find. None of them had any drives available [despite some media and
web page claims to the contrary].

I contacted Apple [several ways] and asked what to do. The only response
I got was that If my drive had been an Apple drive, Apple would have
replaced it [no information as to how or with what].

I finally read about the 1gb drive above on OGrady's PowerPage. When I
called 800/SOS-APPL about it, they referred me to my "local" Apple
dealers, none of whom [until the CompUSA service tech] knew how to find
the drive in their system.

I have subsequently read reports of bigger/faster/cheaper drives from
other sources but-

when the next drive I buy breaks, if it is a smaller/slower/more-expensive
Apple drive, will I be guaranteed [or be more likely to find] a
replacement for it than if I go the third party route again? and-

Does the question of whether the drive is installed by an authorized Apple
dealer [for $70 bucks and a 400 mile drive] have any bearing on the
matter?

8- FINALLY-

Is there a better place to post this query?

Subject: Slow Ethernet/boot-ROM 2.8F2/PPC 7xxx

Hi.
I have a PowerMac 7600/120 connected to a ethernet network of hundreds of
other Macs of all shapes, sizes, and vintages. To my knowledge, I am the only
one here experiencing this difficulty. ALMOST every time someone tries to
Appleshare my mailbox, my machine crashes, also temporarily (about two
minutes) hanging up the person trying to connect to my machine. Apple Tech
support tried to blame our network after I duplicated the problem with only
Mac OS 7.6 extensions at startup, but I have recently come across a little
tidbit from YARC systems (www.yarc.com) that suggests the problem may be in my
7600 instead. I used their little application called YARC-Probe that tells me
I have boot-ROM version 2.8F2, the very same version that is showing up in
other Macs with this type of "Slow Ethernet Error" problem.

My questions: Is this problem somewhat unique, or is it widespread? Does
anyone know if Apple is planning to do anything about it? I would prefer not
to purchase an additional ethernet card.

Please direct replies to dbrand@utmem1.utmem.edu
-David Brand

*********************************************
The "YARC-Probe" application (www.YARC.com)
============================
Thanks to:
Dr. Karsten Jeppesen
VP of Development,
YARC Systems Corp.

Updated as of: January 31st 1997

What it does:
 -----------
The YARC-Probe application identifies the revision number of the boot-ROM.
The boot-ROM is a chip soldered into your machine that takes care of the
initial start-up procedure.
The YARC-Probe does not alter your machine in any way and it doesn't write
anything anywhere - except for the message on the screen.

Why does it do that:
 -----------------
For some time we have been aware of network problems on the Macintosh
platform. The symptom is extremely slow network performance, sometimes even
regular network failure: "There was an error switching to ethernet..."

What does that have to do with the boot-ROM rev 2.8F2:
 -------------------------------------------------
Until recently - we believed that the error was due to the boot-ROM itself.
Now we know that that is not the case, but all machines that have exhibited
the error are equipped with the rev 2.8F2 boot-ROM.
Please note that we state that we are seeing that all machines SHOWING the
error has the boot-ROM 2.8F2. We did not state that BECAUSE a machine has the
boot-ROM rev 2.8F2 then it WILL show the "Slow Network Error".
There is quite a difference. We don't see all the machines in the world. We
just see the ones that shows errors.

What to do about it.
 -----------------
First - don't panic. If you discover that your Mac has the 2.8F2 but you don't
have any problems, and if you don't expect to change the hardware
configuration, then don't worry.
You should know that, based on our observations, inserting PCI cards in these
machines, seems to aggravate the problem.
If, on the other hand, you are experiencing this problem, (and you WILL know
if you are) then at this time, we only know of one good work around:
Put in an alternative ethernet card. All reports we have had supports the
theory that the alternative ethernet card will solve the problem.

Subject: Spelling Checker

I just wanted to send my personal thanks to the many people who sent
me a reply with a suggestion for a freeware/shareware spelling checker.
Just another great reason to use a mac.

I also have 2 IBM clones (thanks to my parents *sigh*) and when you
start asking for help or suggestions regarding IBM (or clones) then
it's next to impossible to get help.

Thanks

Subject: Tempo=Mac OS 8?

Hey guys:

I just read an article posted on Macworld's web-page that stated that
Tempo, due this July and presumed to be called Mac OS 7.7, will instead be
called Mac OS 8! Who knows what Rhapsody will be called, and who cares!
System 8 is on the way!

Mark.

Subject: WorldPort 14400 PCMCIA on a Mac ?

Fellow Info-Macers,

I have a managed to get hold of a USRobotics WorldPort PCMCIA Dual
Standard 16,800 Fax/Data/Cellular modem, in a package containing software
to install the modem on a Windoze computer. My intension was to use it
with my PowerBook 1400. When I insert the modem in one of my PCMCIA slots
the modem appears on my desktop (I'm using MacOS 7.6), and it is
correctly recognized by the computer as a USRobotics PCMCIA 16,800 Dual
Standard Fax modem. Dispite this fact, when I try to use the modem with
ZTerm or FreePPP, I get no connection with the modem. As soon as I select
the PCMCIA slot as the modem port, the program freezes up for a while,
before it comes to the conclusion that there is no connection with the
modem. It is as if the modem wasn't turned on (this is what FreePPP
reports).

My reseller of the modem has since told me that the modem simply won't
work on a Macintosh. I refuse to believe this, since it correctly shows
up on my desktop. The manual says that you can install it on both Windows
3.1, 95 and NT, as well as DOS. It seems pretty versatile to me! Could
there really be something wrong with the hardware so that I can't use it
on a Mac? I have seen newer WorldPort modems for the Mac, but I don't
know if this old modem will work. I have gotten very little assistance
>From the reseller. USRobotics didn't know if it would work so they tried
it themselves and came to the conclusion that it didn't... :(

Other sources recommended getting init strings for the modem off the net.
I have also downloaded a CCL script (not sure what the do) for WorldPort
modems. As far as I know, this is not the problem. I should be able to
get some kind of a response from the modem without a string or a script.
Correct me if I'm wrong...

So, my question to you is, do you know any way I could get this PCMCIA
modem to work with my Mac.

TIA,
Jonatan Lander
