NetSupport Page is a freeware application designed to aid network support
personnel and end-users in determining the current and past status of
their AppleTalk and TCP/IP network. It automatically generates a World
Wide Web page (an HTML document) displaying the current status of
specified AppleTalk zones and IP addresses at user-specified intervals.

Any web browser can be used to view the web page. If the HTML document is
shared by a web server or AppleShare server, any client on the network

Subject: [*] Tagline 1.2, signature randomizer

-Tagline 1.2 -

Script Wizards Software
January 1997

Tagline's main usage, simply stated, is to create a random e-mail
signature. This is accomplished by adding a one line quote or humorous
saying (a "tagline") to your e-mail signature. Tagline 1.0, released in
August of 1996, did just that, but with one major flaw: a limitation on
the number of taglines in the tagline list. This flaw has been addressed
with the release of Tagline 1.1 and all future versions.

New to this version includes low level AppleEvent support. This means
that if you double-click on any tagline list that you download from the
official tagline web site (http://www.flnet.com/~bclark/sw/tagline.html)
or drag & drop any text file onto the application, that file will be used
instead of the default. Read more about this in the documentation.

Tagline comes with 281 taglines for you to get started right away. It
also comes with two AppleScript(tm) scripts, one called "Signature Maker"
which will generate a generic signature based on information you give it,
and one called "Add Tagline" which will add taglines you give it to the
tagline list you specify. These three additions to the program will make
it easy for you to start using Tagline 1.2 right away.

Subject: (resolved) Phantom control of printer port

I had a number of helpful replies to my quandry regarding a phantom
application taking over my printer port so that I could not use my
ColorWriter 2400 (at home). The printer manual said to restart the
computer to shake loose the application, but that did not help. The key
was that I had zapped the PRAM during a session with SOS-APPL in trying
to revive a 15" Multisync monitor that had gone into a coma.

The solution turned out to be embarrassingly straightforward. I got a
couple of replies suggesting that Appletalk had been made active (by
default) after I zapped the PRAM. I looked around for some way to
switch off Appletalk and could not remember how to do it. I randomly
opened the Chooser and there was the problem!

I had never thought to look in the Chooser because, in my mind, I am not
on a network. However, there were the printer and Globalfax, fat and
sassy. Click on printer. Choose printer port option. Say OK to
turning off Appletalk. Everything is back to normal.

Thanks for everyone's advice from around the world.

Well, I guess this didn't make it to the digest the first time I sent it

I'm looking for suggestions for a good extended keyboard for a new Mac
I'll be buying in about a month. I had an Apple extended keyboard II
with my old system, but that went along with it when I sold it. I like
the Apple version, but think it's a little high-priced. I've not heard
many good things about their other keyboard. I'm considering the Alps
Glidepoint keyboard, but haven't heard much about that yet. I'm also
looking at the DataDesk models as well.

Any opinions would be appreciated.

There is an equivalent to both that I've tried out. The first, for reducing
the size of photos, is ResFork Killer. As for mapping software, try
ImageMapper. Both are available at Info-Mac.

Subject: CSM-Runtime Enabler

Greetings Mac Guru's,

I was today sent a CDROM with a beta copy of AOL's UK Mac software. I can
participate in the beta testing for the duration and for free. Wanting to
be one of the few to get something for nothing from AOL I loaded up the
disk and proceeded to install. After a reboot, which was necessary because
the software places extensions and system stuff on your startup drive, I
tried to open the programme. I got a dialog box saying CSM Runtime
enabler is needed to run it. Ho hum. Apple tell us that the extension is
very buggy and should be avoided by 68k Macs.

As the son of a painter, I find Kaleidoscope irresistable for fooling
around with the user interface. But I am having problems with my Mac
Centris 610 (OS 7.5.5) freezing on start-up ("error 10"). When this
happens, I must restart with extensions off, take Kaleidoscope out of my
control panels folder, also remove from the extensions folder whatever
color scheme I was using, then restart. If I reinsert the Kaleidoscope cdev
(but not the color scheme extension), my Centris restarts without problems
and runs fine. Could certain color schemes be the culprit? For example,
this morning I hung up with Tetsuya Asanuma's "Luminary 1.0" as the color
scheme (Kaleidoscope 1.0.1). I took it out of my extensions folder,
restarted, selected a new color scheme, and have been running without
problems. Anyone else experiencing similar problems?

Are you running QuickDraw GX. If so, it is a known problem with a

Paul Mullen asked "What's a Mac Plus good for?"

A Mac Plus will run System 7.1 quite happily, although it is noticably
slower than System 6. If you are on a network (and it sounds that you are
not) it is worth it for the aliases alone. Otherwise, I would think there is
not much benefit.

I wouldn't try running current versions of any software on it. I suspect
that Claris Works probably requires Color QuickDraw (this is a guess). If
so, it would not run on a Mac Plus.

A Mac Plus running Microsoft Word version 4 is very acceptable. I found Word
5 on a Plus unusably slow, but I'm quite fussy. I can't think of anything in
Word 5 that isn't in Word 4 that I used to write my dissertation, and I do
use things like glossaries, outlining, styles, frames, etc.

We found at our lab in Birmingham that Word 6 on a PowerMac 7100 gets
stifled if there is not enough memory. I would guess that you need at least
16 MB and probably more. Symptoms are that it takes ages to redraw equations
or go into the equation editor. I don't think virtual memory will help
though. Also, make sure you don't have any memory hungry extensions loaded
that you don't need. We removed something to do with ODBC (?) and that freed
up an incredible amount of system memory.

Subject: The arrow pointer...??

Is it possible to modify the color and/or appearance
of the arrow pointer? I have seen it done in macmine
sweeper, but nothing else. It eludes me when I search
with Resedit as well.

Thanks,

Chris

Subject: Two internal hard drives?

Hi,

I was wondering if I could install a second internal hard drive in my PPC
7500/100. I am looking on adding a two to three gig hard drive. Also, any
suggestion on what brand of hard drive to use, internal or external.

TIA

There is a Web site (therefore, cross-platform!)

  <http://www.raspberryhill.com/gifwizard.html>

that will manipulate GIFs to make them smaller with no visual degradation
(or you can degrade it if you want.

The current issue of MacAddict has an excellent article on configuring and
using a Plus including recommendations for software for the net and home
type things. (they recommend system 7.5.5)
