Subject: (Q) Mac relational databases

Dear Digest readers,
I've heard of 4th Dimension, and know about FileMaker Pro, but don't
know if it is possible to get them to import Microsoft Access
databases. I have DataViz MacLinkPlus 11.0, but it doesn't say in
its database translators either Microsoft Access or Filemaker Pro, or
4th Dimension for that matter. There is Microsoft Works in the
translators, but I don't think that is relational, and I don't know
where to get Microsoft works for the Mac. It is important the
database be relational, as we have multiple databases with common
fields that sometimes need to be linked together, and preferably over
a network of both PCs and Macs.

Thank you.
Sincerely,
abrody@smart.net

Subject: [*] FileDispenser 3.1

FileDispenser optimizes file management by applying filters when copying
or moving files from a Source Folder. A Source Folder may be any folder,
drive or CD. Files are identified and categorized according to your choice
of file attribute such as format, application that create/edit the file,
date the file was modified or file name (alphabetically or numerically,
file Prefix or Suffix). FileDispenser also watches an user-defined
hot-folder, checking periodically, copy or move files that been dropped in
the hot-folder and categorizes them while copying.

Subject: [*] IconBuilder - Version 2.0.1 - October 1999

The Iconfactory is proud to announce an all new tool for creating and
constructing 32-bit icons for Mac OS 8.5 - IconBuilder. IconBuilder combines
the power and flexibility of Adobe Photoshop(tm) with the ease of use of
IconDropper to make a powerful icon creation tool for both beginner and
advanced users as well as professional software developers.

Written by veteran Photoshop filter author - Craig Hockenberry, IconBuilder
is the first "real world" solution for creating 32-bit icons for Mac OS 8.5.
Thanks to the use of layers (and their transparent properties), Photoshop
makes an ideal editor to create the blended shadows, smooth outlines and
translucent areas of 8.5 icons. Because it is a Photoshop plug-in filter,
IconBuilder has the ability to translate any kind of transparent effect done
in Photoshop layers, quickly and easily into the world of 32-bit icons for
Mac OS 8.5 and beyond.

"IconBuilder is the best tool a professional icon designer could ever hope
for. No more futzing around in a resource editor, just do all your work
where it's supposed to be done, Photoshop!" - Arlo Rose, co-creator of
Kaleidoscope

This release includes a small bug fix for users running Mac OS 9.

Subject: [*] IconDropper - Version 3.2.2 - October 1999

IconDropper allows users to customize their Mac's icons on-the-fly through
the use of Drag-n-Drop technology. Instead of having to copy and paste
custom icons from tons of folders on your hard drive, IconDropper stores all
icons in custom designed sets called "packs". A single click is required to
update any folder's icon and see the results in real time. IconDropper (and
its sister apps, IconPacker and IconDragger) let the user design and embed
custom banners and background colors into the packs when saved. Packs can
then be e-mailed to friends or distributed on the Internet. For more
information about this exciting new piece of Macintosh shareware, or to
download some cool looking icon packs, please visit us at:
<http://www.iconfactory.com>

Release 3.2.2 of IconDropper includes support for 32-bit custom icons in Mac
OS 8.5 and later, while still being compatible with older versions of the
OS. There are also many user interface updates and a bug fix for users on
Mac OS 9.

We've also updated our web site with 32-bit icons, so please drop by
<http://www.iconfactory.com> for a look.

IconDropper is available from Info-Mac as:

icondropper-322.hqx (larger file compatible with Mac OS 7.5 and up)
icondropper-ppc-322.hqx (smaller file for Mac OS 8.5 and later only)

*Fat Binary Executable.

Super Mac Freecell is the best solitaire card game available for the
Macintosh. This is so much better than any other variation of solitaire
that you may never go back!

For all of you who don't know what Super Mac Freecell is a super
addictive solitaire card game. What makes Super Mac Freecell more
interesting than most solitaire card games is that the possibilities to
win are only limited by talent. Nearly every game (approx 99.99 %) of
Super Mac Freecell can be won. This doesn't mean it is simple. Far from
it, there is room for almost limitless improvement. This makes Super Mac
Freecell much more interesting than solitaire variations like klondike,
where luck is a large factor in the game. So why not give Super Mac
Freecell a try. I bet you never play klondike again, I haven't.

Version 1.5.1:

*Fixed the about box which crashed the registered version.
*Fixed lots of other bugs involving various little things.

Subject: [*] TriVectus Kicho 1.5 - Keyboard Enhancement Utility

Kicho is a small background-only application that modifies the
behavior of the caps-lock key such that when caps-lock is on, typing
with the shift key produces lower-case letters, similar to the
behavior of the caps-lock key on PCs and Apple IIs.

Version 1.5 adds the following options:

	* Completely disable the caps-lock key
	* Disable the help key
	* Play subtle key-click sounds as keys are pressed

Because Kicho is an application and not an extension or control
panel, it can be activated and deactivated on-the-fly, without
restarting, and is unlikely to cause system conflicts. However, being
a background application, it's still invisible to the user.

Kicho requires Mac OS 8 and a PowerPC processor. It is sold as
shareware at a price of $10 for a single-user license. Site and
worldwide licenses are available.

Verbs and Nouns Russisch (Russian/German), by Richard Wellmann.

This is a demo version of the module which helps you to study Russian
vocabulary and grammar or to simply look words up in the dictionary. The
complete version of the module contains adjectives, adverbs, conjunctions,
subjunctions, prepositions, pronouns, nouns and verbs; altogether until now
almost 20.000 words and more than 200.000 derived forms. The demo includes
43 inflected nouns with sound and pictures.

To run the module you need the program 'Verbs and Nouns' available from the
Info-Mac mirrors. The module is regularly updated and enlarged.

What is World Clock CSM?

You are a real globetrotter and spend one day in New York, one in Tokyo and
one in Sydney? You live in a huge country? You have frequent contacts with
people from other continents or foreign companies?
World Clock CSM will then make your life easier.

World Clock CSM is a clock for the control strip which lets you
simultaneously display up to 24 different times.

With World Clock CSM you can:
- rotate the displayed clocks so that minimum Control Strip space is
required (rotation speed can adjusted);
- display Universal Time (UTC) and Internet Time (BMT);
- configure your own cities and locations;
- move and sort clocks by time and city name;
- show date and weekday and apply different time formats to different clocks;
- add frequently used cities to World Clock menu;
- calculate date and time conversions.

World Clock CSM is available in English, Japanese, German, Dutch, French
and Italian.

* * *

What's new in World Clock CSM 2.7?

- The "Time Converter" dialog box has been added: it lets you easily
calculate corresponding dates & times in cities or locations belonging to
different time zones.

- Several problems concerning Internet Time have been fixed. First of all
Swatch beats from @000 to @099 are now correctly displayed using three
digits. Then a bug, which could cause the time not to be correctly updated
after a clock switched from Internet Time to a different time, has been
fixed. Finally the "Show Internet Time" command doesn't anymore affect the
current clock's time format (v2.6 hid seconds and AM/PM, if shown).

- An incompatibility with Extensions Strip which could lead to registration
problems under particular circumstances has been solved.

Subject: [*] Y2K App Checker 1.0.4

Switzerland--October 25, 1999--Blue Line Studios today announced the
release of "Y2K App Checker", an utility to check Macintosh applications
for year 2000 compliance.

Y2K App Checker checks your installed software according to the database
from Macnologist.com <http://www.macnologist.com>, the currently most
complete resource available regarding applications with y2K issues. If Y2K
App Checker finds any programs on any mounted volume that have a known year
2000 incompatibility, it lists the programs' names, their specific
problems, and the recommended solutions.

"The development and testing took us much longer than we originally
anticipated," Dan C. Kueng, president of Blue Line Studios said, "but now
we have to offer quite a useful tool for the Mac community. And best of
all, it's completely free!"

"While is is widely known that the Mac hardware and operating systems are
safe," Richard Barron, president of Macnologist.com, explained, "many
people don't think about their applications as having problems with
internal date handling. Macnologist.com has been compiling information on
the not-so-compliant Mac applications in order to help spread the word
about checking your Mac for compliance--and hopefully avoiding any
embarrassing situations without y2K ready machines come January first. We
see this venture with Blue Line Studios as another large step in spreading
the word about Mac y2K issues before they turn into problems."

"Rich has done a great job to help us implement his database." Dan said,
"Why don't you check your Mac right away and see if Y2K App Checker finds
something. You bet it does!"

Y2K App Checker is freeware. It can be downloaded free-of-charge from Blue
Line Studios' web site <http://www.blueline-studios.com>.

The home page of Y2K App Checker is at
<http://www.blueline-studios.com/ykMain.html>.

Interface screenshots and a description of the program's features is
available at <http://www.blueline-studios.com/ykIntrfc.html>.

System requirements are any Macintosh or Mac clone, 4 MB of available RAM,
and system 7 or above. It is Mac-ony; no PC version is available or planned.

Subject: [*] YA-Decoder 3.0.1

YA-Decoder is a simple droplet designed to decode MIME Base64 (including
AppleSingle and AppleDouble), BinHex, MacBinary (including MacBinary III),
and uuencoded files that are dropped upon it. It is intended primarily as a
helper application for decoding usenet binary attachments for newsreaders
that don't have a built-in decoder. It easily handles multiple attachments
per post and posts that have erroneously been encoded multiple times.
YA-Decoder is $15 shareware. Version 3.0.1 is a free upgrade to anyone who
paid to register earlier versions of YA-Decoder. YA-Decoder 3.0.1 requires
System 8.5 or later and Internet Config 2.0 is strongly recommended for
proper operation. The older YA-Decoder 2.4.1 remains available for people
using older system software.

Version 3.0 adds the ability to decode multi-part binary attachments that
have been saved to individual files instead of being concatenated into a
single file. It also allows non-encoded files that have been segmented to
be recombined. A dialog in YA-Decoder allows the parts to be reordered
prior to decoding or recombination so that they don't. Version 3.0.1 fixes
a problem with very slow decoding that occurred on a few systems.

Subject: [*] YA-NewsWatcher 4.2.6

YA-NewsWatcher is a Usenet newsreader application for Macintosh. It
features background and possibly deferred downloading or sending of text
and binary posts with built-in encoding and decoding; styled text, image,
and movie viewing; flexible, complete, and powerful article filtering and
sorting and newsgroup searches; and multiple character set support.
YA-NewsWatcher 4.2.6 is free. It requires System 8.5 or later. The older
YA-NewsWatcher 3.1.x remains available for people using older system
software.

Version 4.2.6 fixes a few bugs, works around a slow binary decoding problem
that occurred on some systems, and also works around corruption of the
References header caused by OE 5. It's a recommended update for all 4.x
users.

Subject: spreadsheet 16384 row limit (Q)

Dear Digest readers,
Appleworks 5.0.4, and Excel 5.0 both appear to have a limit of the
number of rows they will allow in their spreadsheet at 16384.
Anybody know of a spreadsheet program that does not have that limit?
I'd like to be able to sort my website logfile by its various
variables, and I am already at 22000 hits and counting. Now that
hard disks are large enough to handle such files, shouldn't someone
make a spreadsheet that can do that? Not to mention with 192MB of
RAM, it isn't as if I don't have enough memory to hold such a large
spreadsheet in memory.

On a similar topic, I noticed that Appleworks is a lot slower than
Excel is at saving large spreadsheets, and at simply inserting rows
in large spreadsheets. I have a spreadsheet with 800 rows, and 28
columns, and it really slows it down.

Excel 5.0 on the other hand won't show the sheet numbers in MacOS 9
and sometimes crashes with Type 10 errors, and it doesn't properly
sort Dates that are stored in text fields, whereas Appleworks does
properly sort dates in text fields.

Is Excel 98 any better at these features? Is Microsoft Works any
better at these features. I'd like to have some spreadsheet on my
Mac that is faster (I have a G3/233) and is capable of using
MacLinkPlus 11.0 and MacOS 9.0 without problems.

Thank you.
Sincerely,
abrody@smart.net
