====================+=====+=======++=======+=====+====================

* Purpose: *
Here are macros for typesetting *critical editions* with LaTeX.
Packages `lineno' by Stephan I. B"ottcher (SIB), `manyfoot' by
Alexander Rozhenko (AR), and `longtable' by David Carlisle are
enhanced and combined.

* More instructions: *
Sorry, we cannot afford writing more perspicuous and detailed
instructions at present. Some details not dealt with in the present
file are explained in the macro files--start reading in `ednotes.sty'.

* Files included: *
The *"personal"* distribution includes the following files
(brackets explained below):

 (1) readme.txt           (present file)
 (2) ednotes.sty          (main package)
 (3) mfparptc.sty [U]     (experimental footnote extensions)
 (4) edtab02.sty  [U]     (covers tabular environments)
 (5) ltabptch.sty [U] [A] (longtable patch, tools/3485)
 (6) lnopatch.sty [U]     (change first line number)
 (7) linenox0.sty [I]     (implement (8) better)
 (8) lineno.sty   [I] [A] (SIB)
 (9) manyfoot.sty [I] [A] (AR)
(10) nccfoots.sty [I] [A] (AR)
(11) manyfoot.dtx     [A] (AR)
(12) nccfoots.dtx     [A] (AR)

On *CTAN*, on the other hand, files marked by `[A]' are to be obtained
from different CTAN folders (`ltabptch', `lineno' and `ncctools' in
`macros/latex/contrib/').

* Rights: *
For conditions of use and distribution, please see listed files
(lppl). Alex Rozhenko informs us that his (9) and (10) may be
distributed together with his (11) and (12) only (manyfoot/ncctools).

* Installation: *
  (a) Typically, you load file `ednotes.sty' and, additionally at your
choice, some of packages (3)--(6) (marked by `[U]') by \usepackage
in your document file. (See files for package options.) Then as well
as these files that you load explicitly, the files marked by `[I]'
must be visible to TeX when it processes your document file (they are
loaded automatically, \usepackage is obsolete). E.g., you have to copy
them into the folder where all your macro packages are or where your
document file is.
  (b) You may as well *not* load `ednotes.sty', instead load (3)
(mfparptc) only as a patch (?) of (9) (manyfoot). Then just
(3), (9), (10) must be visible to TeX as in (a).
  (c) You may as well just load some of (4)--(7) (`[U]') as
extensions of (8) (lineno). Then (8) must be visible to TeX, and for
(4) and (6), you must load (8) by \usepackage before.
  (d) Moreover, (5) and the `longtable' option of (4) require package
`longtable' from the LaTeX Tools Bundle (CTAN).

* Experimental: *
This release is still experimental. (Note alternatives mentioned in
`ednotes.sty'.) When certain questions have been answered in future,
functionality (and names!) of the packages may change essentially and
their number may decrease.

* Contact us: *
We would be happy about your suggestions on these matters (also on
implementation!) and (in a way) about your bug reports. Since
documentation is so poor at present, please feel free to ask us for
help if needed. Please mail to

    <ednotes.sty@web.de>

If this doesn't work, please try <uwe.lueck@lrz.uni-muenchen.de>
(in particular for help and implementation) or <chr.tapp@gmx.de>.
