************************ MBK-- the contents of the directory are all duplicated in the ".tar" file, and it's easier to get it that way. The tar file is not run through compress because it gets larger. ************************* Hello, This directory contains all kinds of stuff related to my fractal image compression work. Below is a list of what is what: file what it is ----------------------------------------------------- README the file you are reading now. a_paper.ps.Z a paper, which appeared in several variants in several places, including FRACTALS and CHAOS, Peitgen, Saupe, Jurgens, Springer Verlag, New York 1992; and SIGGRAPH '92 course notes. It is at a very lay level, with almost no math at all. It references other papers which are more mathematical. Note the file size before you ftp this one (see below). a_p_nofigs.ps.Z the same paper as above, with no figures or images. This makes it much smaller for ftp-ing. **** **** Note copies of these papers have been moved out of the tar file **** into the main directory for those people who want them, and not **** all the programs. **** decode a sun sparc executable decoding program which takes as input the *.trn files. This program outputs sunraster format images if you call it with the -O flag. An interesting feature of the algorithm can be demonstrated by decoding with the -s flag; e.g. decode lena.trn -O -s512x512 will decode the image into an image 4 times as large as the original. Since the images are encoded as fractals, detail is created at all scales when the images are decoded. (See the file decode.help) decode.exe PC executable of the decoding program. Decoding at larger image sizes is not possible (yet) on PC's. Also, if you wish to display the image, you need VGA graphics. decode.help a text file discussing flags for the decode program. *.trn compressed image files. Many of these, like london, san and shuttle were very poor originals - I just found it difficult to find quality images on the network that weren't barely clad women; and even so there are many women among the images. lena.ras the original 256x256 image of Lena in sunraster format. It is here for comparison purposes. Because the algorithms are changing almost daily, I update them rarely. If you want to be notified of updates and other stuff that comes up, write me e-mail at yfisher@ucsd.edu and I will put you on my update mailing list. Finally, I haven't put on the compression program which is not really ready, to my taste. However, if you wish to have me encode an image for you, write me. Please send any and all comments to yfisher@ucsd.edu and thanks for your interest. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Yuval Fisher e-mail: yfisher@ucsd.edu INLS 0402 University of California, San Diego La Jolla, CA 92093 ---------------------------------------------------------------------
