Regarding NETF activities in Network management

Background
----------

EXISTING SITUATION

Most of the Network Managemnt tools used today are based on Simple
Network Maangemtn Protocol - SNMP. For the DECnet service NM is done
by a set of special DEC tools. The LAN-layer in NORDUnet and other
LAN:s are managed by yet another set of tools.


THE IDEAL SITUATION

The ideal situation would be one NMS to manage all types of relevant
subnet/services.Over the last year several vendors has released
NMS-products.


The approach
------------

The approach is to define a set of requirements for use in the
existing multiprotocol environment. Based on these requirements we
could evaluate the existing products, and if they don't meet all of
the requirements, we could later decide to cooperate with the
developers to give us better products.

In parallell we should explore how to improve the overall use of NMS
to better support the networking services.

NMS software evaluation
-----------------------

The idea is to make a list of NMS-software of interest for evaluation.
Each interested party chooses a NMS-package for evaluation. The result
should be documented according to a agreed format. 


Use of NMS
----------

The use of NMS-NM should be evaluated. A plan for how to implement authorized
SNMP and other agents in NORDUnet/National Nordic networks should be made.
Supportsystems like tickethandling et c should also be evaluated.
