Wed 20-May-92: I have programmed two educational games involving
national flags. A quiz of national flags, and as a by-product, a
memory game of pairing turned flags. I have updated these games and
release the update as garbo.uwasa.fi:/pc/ts/tsgmed12.zip. I have
added new flags to reflect the changes brought by the recent world
events. The new flags include flags from the Commonwealth of
Independent States such as Russia, Ukraine, Byelorussia and so on.
I have not, however, reflected the events in the Balkan region
since the picture is still forming. My flag games are devoid of any
political connotations. The (old?) Yugoslav flag is retained for the
time being in these games, since whatever happens at least it is
part of world history just like the flag of the Soviet Union
(although the latter does not feature in the games).
I have added some common flags that were missing. These added
flags are those of Great Britain, Australia, New Zealand, Canada,
Brazil. This brings the total number of flags to en even 100.
I usually try to avoid hype my own programs, but I wish to say
that I am fairly pleased with my flag games. They both are nicely
educational for children and adults alike, and they are pleasantly
colorful. Furthermore they made a reasonably challenging graphics
programming task. These games have brought me most of the feedback
(positive, I am pleased to say) that I have received from the gentle
users on my games programs.
An Ega color video adapter is a necessary minimum for playing
these games.
A tip: I you dont like to play, but would like to study the
flags, use FLAGQUIZ /d. The flags are displayed to you in an
alphabetical order. The alphabetical order is new feature in
FLAGQUIZ. I have this option because some users like me may
appreciate games in general, but do not have the time or the
inclination to play.

Sat 23-May-92: Garbo has some directories like /pc/miscutil and
/pc/unix which include assortment of utilities. It is often
difficult to guess by the package names only what is in them. I
therefore listed the contents of all the .zip packages in the said
two directories. The lists are available (in ascii) as
 36348 May 23 09:29 garbo.uwasa.fi:/pc/miscutil/0miscuti.dir
 48259 May 23 09:30 garbo.uwasa.fi:/pc/unix/0unix.dir
I cannot guarantee that there will be updated on a regular basis,
but they'll be useful anyway which they give the broad outlines on
what is in the assortments. There is, in fact, a third such
contents file
 17584 May 21 15:53 garbo.uwasa.fi:/pc/INDEXTS.ZIP
which gives the annotated contents of all the files in the /pc/ts
directory, but that list is updated on a regular basis.

   All the best, Timo

I made a couple of others:
110681 May 23 10:11 garbo.uwasa.fi:/pc/pcmag/0pcmag.dir
148659 May 23 10:12 garbo.uwasa.fi:/pc/turbopas/0turbopa.dir

Especially the former, that is the PC-Magazine utilities contents
list has been a kind of a FAQ.

Vision Edit is a shareware DOS text editor which has the following features:
mouse support, pull-down menus, multiple windows, context sensitive on-line
help, macros, no file size limit, and many more.

The new 3.3 version contains the following features:

   - new KeyCmds menu item now makes it easy for new users to learn all editting
hot-key commands (Box Commands, Block Commands, Insert/Delete Commands,
Cursor Movement Commands, Miscellaneous Commands, Set Marker, and GoTo
     Marker);
   - new Config menu lets you customize your system:
     - foreign languages support (keyboard redefinition & edit direction): you
can assign other ASCII codes e.g. other language characters to selected
keys; you can even edit text from right to left (Hebrew and Arabic
       languages);
     - you can remap most Vision Edit commands (Config|Commands) e.g. you can
make Vision Edit behave like another editor with commands of which you
       are familiar;
   - Block Operations (block selection, copy, cut & paste) in column mode;
   - Dragging a selected block both in column and line mode (using a mouse or
     arrow keys);

     word if it already exists in your text file;
   - all dialog boxes now have a Help Button
   - modified Delete Word (Ctrl-T) function - now works like that in Borland's
     Turbo Pascal IDE
   - improved File|DOS Shell command which gives you almost all memory available
(500 - 600 KB depending on the system); this has been achieved by swapping
     RAM contents to Expanded Memory (if available) or to a hard disk;
   - new File|Run Program command which lets you run programs and DOS external
     commands directly from Vision Edit;
   - the ability to edit Hidden and Read-Only files;
   - some fixes and internal improvements;

EMS. It has a nice GUI, and it supports SB pro, SB, pc speaker, and output

This is a shareware from Sweden. Fully functional program with some options

Following is basic information on the program:

VAR Grade is a program that allows you to both grade and record
attendance in your classes. This is a complete grading system, and
will do just about anything that you need to do. In particular, it
will allow you to record, analyze, and print grades and attendance.
This program is flexible enough to allow you to grade your class
with the same methods you now use--except that the program does the
tedious chores of adding, plotting, and writing the scores. The
program has been written by and for teachers and requires no special
   knowledge of computers or MS-DOS.
This program can be used for both grades and attendance. You may
grade with either letter or number grades, and you can mix and match
letter and number grades. You can change the points of any assignment
or score at any time. You can also use many different types of
pre-defined assignments (tasks), including ones that are the sums,
averages, and weights of other tasks. Any task or combination of
tasks can be plotted, correlated, and analyzed statistically.
Attendance and seating charts for your classes can be recorded.
Either individual student scores or scores for each section of the
class can be printed. You can also add database items, like address,
age, year in school, etc. When printing, you can control page length,
margins, and type size. International users can change output, dates,
   and other country dependent information.
There are no other grading programs that can do all that VAR Grade
does, whether they are shareware or "buy before you try" (store-bought)
programs. Try VAR Grade, then register it.

This program will allow you to have:
--up to 16,000 students, with 2,000 assignments per student
--up to 254 sections of students per class
--up to 240 days of student attendance
      --up to 200 database items
      --an unlimited number of classes
   You can:
--sum, average, weight, and scale assignments, discard the lowest,
convert to percentages, assign extra credit, assign final grades,
	and much more
--plot any assignment for individual students or the whole class
      --correlate any two exams
      --calculate statistics on any assignment
--calculate & assign T-scores, percentiles, and standard deviations
--plot trends for the class or for an individual student
--write the scores to a printer and/or to a disk
--write the scores by section/class or by each individual student
      --sort students many ways
      --define your own grading system
--export and import data from other programs
      --write your own printed reports
--read the disk based manual from anywhere in the program
--use a calculator, calender, and macros
--and MORE, in fact, do just about anything you want!

I hope you and Timo can post this on garbo.

       Thanks,

       -=- Hugh

   Major changes in version 1.5:
   - anti-virus programs simulated
   - PATH command simulated
   - popup windows can be moved (left mouse button). Close popup window
with the right mouse button now!
   - coloring of infected items can be switched off
   - reorganization of menu
   - reorganization of text files
   - New start disabled (temporary)
   - printed manual available (only in German)

Subject: TreeSZ01.zip - Like "tree" with dir sizes!

I am uploading to your great public service this program:

    File Name:TreeSZ01.Zip
This utility is like Ms-Dos's "Tree" with (Sub)Directory sizes !
    Suggested Directory:\pc\DirUtil
The Authors are Issi & Amit Pazgal
    E-Mail: Pazgal@Math.tau.ac.il
Surface Address: 11 Klausner St. Ra'ananna 43366 Israel.
    There Are NO special requirements.
The program is absolutely free. No strings attached!
This program is NOT a demo NOR a nagware.
The program is practically self-explanatory nevertheless we also
    included a 2-page external document (TreeSZ01.doc).
Free Sources are available upon request !
    Size: Zipped=10,917 UnZipped=18,257

    Description:
TreeSZ01 is a lovely utility (written in Turbo-C) that graphically
displays the directory structure and sizes of a drive or a path.
It shows beside the directories names 4 additional columns :-
1st column - "Files" : shows the # of files in THIS (sub)directory.
2nd column - "Tot" : shows the combined # of bytes contained in
			      the directory & its subdirectories.
3rd column - "Dir-Only" : Lists the # of bytes contained only in the
			      current directory.
4th column - "Tot-Subs" : List the size in bytes of the subdirectories.
Size = The occupied disk space, NOT the net size of the files.

Thank you Issi & Amit. This is available now as:

Subject: Demo upload

At the end of April I uploaded the demo version of our X Server for DOS to
garbo. The name of the product is X Appeal, and the demo version is limited
in screen resolution and connection number, but all the other features are
the same as the production version. The demo version can be freely copied
   and redistributed.

Since I got no feedback from you, I would like to know if my previous message,
sent both to you and to Prof. Timo Salmi, has been lost due to email problems
(we were changing our email link at that time). Please tell me also if you
got it, but for any reason you decided to discard my upload; I am not sure
if our product demo is compatible with the policy you follow for the products
in your "demo" directory, or if simply you think it cannot be of general
   interest.

   Thank you for your attention.

   Hi,

I got several requests about SPLAY tree compression and
made a .ZIP file of two sources I had. The sources are
more or less self documenting, there is a C and a
PASCAL version in the .ZIP file.

i have uploaded two utilities to /pc/incoming:

   (1) BOOPS -- a floppy boot sector modification utility. the
boot sector of a floppy will be rewritten so that it
will load and run the boot sector of the first hard drive.
it does just what BootThru does, but it supports all
floppy formats (BootThru 1.05 supports DD format only).
       assembly source is included.

   (2) SCRYPT v3.0 -- a file encoder/decoder based on the s-coder
engine. documentation can be printed from inside the program.

hope they will be useful to someone.

i am a computer science student from estonia, and i can be reached
by e-mail until this friday (may 22nd) only: ti1@vtold.vtol.fi.

Subject: PCXDUMP 5.0 uploaded

   Dear Harri Valkama.

   I have just uploaded PCXDMP50.ZIP to /pc/incoming

   Short description
   -----------------------
   pcxdmp50.zip Dumps 2,4,16,256 and 32768 color screens
   -----------------------

Thank you Jesper. This is now available as:

garbo.uwasa.fi:/pc/graphics/pcxdmp50.zip

-harri-

   Longer description
   -------------------------
Pcxdump is a program to dump a graphic screen to a
   disk file in the PCX-format.
Since it's a resident program, it stays in memory when you run
it. This decreases the memory available for other applications by
9.9 Kb (about 3.5 Kb is used as an internal buffer, so disk writes
will be as few as possible).

Currently the program handles CGA, EGA, VGA and SVGA modes, but
   no Hercules.
You still need miminum an EGA card to install PCXDUMP.

PCXDUMP captures all of the video modes listed in the following
chart, which have been standardized by manufacturers of the various
   video adapters mentioned above:

		  Video Graphics Adapters
		  Mode Resolution Colors Supporting
		  ----- ---------- ---------- --------------------

		   04 320 x 200 4 CGA/EGA/VGA *)
		   05 320 x 200 4 CGA/EGA/VGA *)
		   06 640 x 200 2 CGA/EGA/VGA
		   13 320 x 200 16 EGA/VGA
		   14 640 x 200 16 EGA/VGA
		   15 640 x 350 2 EGA/VGA
		   16 640 x 350 16 EGA/VGA
		   17 640 x 480 2 VGA/MCGA
		   18 640 x 480 16 VGA
		   19 320 x 200 256 VGA/MCGA

*) In these two CGA-modes, PCXDUMP will always use a palette
of Black, Cyan, Magenta and White.

And if you have any of these SVGA-cards, you will be able to use
   their SVGA-modes as well !!

   -------------------------------------------------------------------------------

WHAT'S NEW IN PCXDUMP VERSION 5.00
   ----------------------------------

For those who are curious, Version 5.00 of PCXDUMP
contains the following additions and improvements over
   versions 4.00

   --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Version 5.00 - If you install PCXDUMP with a delay with
the /TIME or /DISK option, PCXDUMP will now
beep when it takes over the INT 09h or/and
			       INT 08h.
			     - It is now possible to capture graphics in
virtually any program or game. I have met some
problems with a number of Apogee game, such as
Commander Keen and many commercial games, such
as A10 Tank Killer V 1.5. or Lemmings. However
			       these programs represents different problems.
Games such as Keen and Lemmings define a "virtual"
screen, which is much bigger than the actuel
resolution. This is how they make the impressive
smooth scrool in all directions. Games as A10
Tank Killer and many (new) others uses a trick
to gain four videopages on a standard VGA display
card to optain smooth animation with page flip-
ping. Needless to say, PCXDUMP will now work in
these modes, but since detecting and manipulation
of these special videomodes depends heavily on
			       register reading/writings, PCXDUMP will only
recognize these modes, if your videocard is a
least a VGA-card. Reason: on an EGA-card, all
registers in read-only, sigh! Besides, you won't
be able to cut out part of the screen in the
special modes: the screen will be saved immediately.
			     - Actually some programs uses a special mode (X) on
			       a VGA-card: 320 x 240 x 256. This mode provides
square pixels and 2 display pages on a standard
VGA card. PCXDUMP is able to handle this mode
also. The most tricky game is BANANOID (a free-
ware game), which uses mode X, but defines a
virtual screen which is about 500 pixels wide and
has smooth horizontal scroll. PCXDUMP will now
also capture screens from such nasty programs.
			     - A new option: /NOPEL. This option will prevent
PCXDUMP to read a certain register on the graphics
card. Reading of this register sometimes blanks
the screen while PCXDUMP is dumping graphics
(normally the screen reappears when PCXDUMP is
finished). This register determines exactly where
the screen starts if there is smooth scrool
involved (in a 16 color mode). If you explicit
tell PCXDUMP not to read this register, PCXDUMP
will dump a picture which is 8 pixels wider than
the physical display. Later you can cut out
precisely the part of the picture you're interested
			       in.
			     - PCXDUMP will now recognize and use VESA-cards.
			     - All these new options will only use additional 400
			       bytes !
			     - The registrated version of PCXDUMP will now capture
most of all these SuperVGA hires text modes, such
			       as 132x25, 80x60, 132x44 or 100x40 etc.

In case anyone wonders and wants to ask about the difference in the
file date and the size let me tell you why. This _is_ the same file
at both sites. I apply a standard script on our .zip files. This
script includes the zip -o -z command making the file date the
latest within the package, and putting in the garbo header. Thus,
as far as I understand, the file date at SIMTEL20 shows when the
file was uploaded while at garbo the date stamp shows how new or old
the actual package is.
