Subject: TSRCOM30/TSRSRC30 - TSR mgmt utilities (MARK/RELEASE/MAPMEM)
Summary: Reposted by Keith Petersen
Status: OR

I have uploaded to SIMTEL20 and OAK.Oakland.Edu:

pd1:<msdos.sysutl>
TSRCOM30.ZIP    TSR management utilities (MARK/RELEASE/MAPMEM)
TSRSRC30.ZIP TSR mgmt util sources, TP 6.0 & TASM

This version is an update to TurboPower's collection of TSR
management utilities, which obsoletes version 2.9. This version
now directly supports DOS 5.0, including unloading TSRs loaded
in high memory. Source is included (separate ZIP file).

Subject: COMBI030.ZIP - RAM disk & disk cache sharing XMS memory
Summary: Reposted by Keith Petersen
Status: OR

Since the version 0.10 of my COMBI-Disk program became available I've
received a few replies and hope COMBI-Disk is really useful. So I've
compiled an improved version (0.30), which is now available from SIMTEL20.

pd1:<msdos.dskutl>
COMBI030.ZIP RAM disk & disk cache sharing XMS memory

This is a device driver for RAM disk and disk cache which are using
the same area of extended memory. The RAM disk eats cache memory when
filled with files and releases memory for cache when the files are
deleted.

In version 0.30 some bugs are fixed and performance is improved.

The policy is that SIMTEL20 usually doesn't duplicate the efforts of
some other major archive site. One example is cica.cica.indiana.edu's
Windows3 collection. If I tried to keep up with that you wouldn't see
the average of 300 new files in the MS-DOS collection each month.

The same is true for OS/2. There are collections at mtsg.ubc.ca,
ugle.unit.no, vega.hut.fi, and probably others I am not aware of.
SIMTEL20 does have a PD1:<OS2> directory but there are only a few
files there and new uploads are not encouraged because it would
take time that I usually spend trying to keep the MS-DOS collection
up to date.

I have uploaded to SIMTEL20:

pd1:<msdos.uucp>
FSUU12R4.ZIP    FSUUCP V 1.2 Release 4 MSDOS UUCP Mail & News

** As seen in the November Issue of _Boardwatch_ Magazine ** :-)
** complete with a picture of the author, yours truely ** :-)

This is the latest release of Fubar Systems UUCP (FSUUCP).

FSUUCP implements a UUCP/Usenet transfer protocol for MSDOS based machines.
It comes complete with a uucico, uuxqt, rnews and rmail, mail, readnews,
postnews, uuq, uusnap, and news utilities like batcher and expire, as well
as other helpful utilities.

Unlike other packages, FSUUCP implements these programmes as DOS commands
directly. By putting the executables on your PATH, and setting an environment
variable pointing to your configuration file, you can have UNIX mail and news
on your MSDOS machine from the prompt, just like UNIX.

FSUUCP is shareware.

Summary: Reposted by Keith Petersen
Status: OR

I have uploaded to SIMTEL20:

pd1:<msdos.sprint>
486PAT.ARC Patch for Borland Sprint editor & 486 problem

I called Borland's Tech Support line, 408-438-5300 (SPRINT questions
answered between 8am to noon, Pacific time) about the problem. A
non-Borland employee developed a patch to fix the problem (caused by
the fact that the 486 has a larger prefetch queue than the older
chips). The patch is downward (and upward) compatible, and is
available from Borland's BBS, 408-439-9096, in the SPRINT section as
486PAT.ARC.

I got it and applied it (patches supplied for both 1.00 and 1.01, and
the appropriate patch(es) are applied automatically). Works like a
champ! Back in business - amazing how frustrating it is to bring up a
new machine without a decent editor. Several other SPRINT-related
files are also available. I'm waiting to hear from their sysop to see
if we can arrange to carry *all* their files on SIMTEL20.

Summary: Reposted by Keith Petersen

I have uploaded to SIMTEL20:

pd1:<msdos.menu>
MENU15.ZIP Easy to use menu, mouse support. NO memory use

This program is just what you have been looking for! At least I think
so, because I have been looking for a program like this for a long
time. That's why I wrote this myself now.

You set up an ASCII file containing the menu items (3 lines each) and
MENU does the rest: It pops up a window showing as many items as
possible. Scroll for the rest. Nice SAA mouse-usable buttons for
scrolling and selecting!

I said NO MEMORY, because this menu starts the application out of
batch files, thus not wasting any memory for keeping the MENU in
background. Don't worry, this doesn't take that much time for
reloading. Even NC is slower than MENU !

This new version now has a screen saver and many new features.

Try it!

Summary: Reposted by Keith Petersen

I have uploaded to SIMTEL20:

pd1:<msdos.sysutl>
BTRSTD15.ZIP Counts the hours your PC is working, nonresid.

This program counts without you hardly doing and noticing anything the
hours your computer has been working. All you have to do is to start a
little batch before shutting down your PC. BTRSTD does the rest. It
doesn't run in the background all the time, but simply does its job
when the computer is turned on and off. It doesn't get confused when
you reboot and it even keeps track whether any of your applications
have changed the internal time.

Try it and you will be astonished how many hours your computer is working!

BTRSTD stands for the German word "Betriebsstunden', which means the
hours of working. As this is a German program, unfortunately, the
documentation is still in German. Whoever is interested in this
program, just E-Mail (see below) me, and I'll send you what you need.

symbolically mathematical problems. SymbMath performs symbolic formula,
as well as exact numeric computation. It can manipulate complicated
formulas and return answers in terms of symbols, formulas and exact
numbers, not just floating-point numbers. Symbolic mathematics is also
called Computer Algebra, Symbolic Manipulation, Algebraic Manipulation,
Symbolic Computation, or Algebraic Computation.
      There are a number of software packages for symbolic
computation, e.g. MACSYMA, Reduce, MAPLE, Mathematica, MicroCalc, etc.
However, most of them require large memory, e.g. Mathematica requires
at least 4 MBytes of RAM. MicroCalc is available for small IBM PC.
MicroCalc provides graphical or numerical answers, and recognizes
special symbols as constants and variables, but outputs formula only
for derivatives.
      SymbMath is different from most of other software. (1) It
only require 640 KBytes RAM, so it can run on small IBM PC under
MS-DOS. (2) It is able to learn from human as machine learning. If
users only show it one thing (e.g. one integral) without writing any
line of program, it will learn many relative knowledges (e.g. many
integrals) although it has no these predefined knowledges before. (3)
Users easily edit the library (e.g. integral tables) in the formula
format. (4) It can do something that other software cannot do.
      Its capabilities include facilities to provide analytical and
numerical answers for:
      1. Differentiation: derivatives, higher order derivatives,
partial derivatives, mixed derivatives, total derivatives, implicit
differentiation.
      2. Integration: indefinite integration, definite integration,
multiple integration, infinite integration, parametric integration,
iterated integration, line integration, surface integration,
discontinuous integration, implicit integration.
      3. Solution of equations: polynomial equations, algebraic
equations, systems of equations, differential and integral equations.
      4. Manipulation of expressions: simplification, factorisation,
expansion, substitution, evaluation, user-defined functions, built-in
standard functions (including the error function).
      5. Calculation: exact and floating-point numerical computation
of integer, rational, real and complex numbers in the range from
-infinity to infinity, even with different units.
      6. Limits: real limits, complex limits, one-sided limits,
including the indeterminate forms, (e.g. 0/0, infinity/infinity, etc.).
      7. Chemical calculation: the molecular weights, atomic weights,
and concentrations, by entering the symbols of the chemical elements.
      8. Chemical reactions: inorganic and organic chemical reactions.
      9. Others such as extrema, Taylor series, lists, arrays, vectors,
matrices, sum, product, etc.
      Its features also include:
      1. Programming as an interpreter.
      2. Interface with other software (e.g. with PlotData for graph).
        3. Outputting two-dimentional displays, and the BASIC format.
      4. On-line help, on-line manual.
      5. Syntax check and the line editor for input.

KEYCAC01.ZIP    KeyCache TSR word predictor

[From the KeyCache docs]
Keycache is a small TSR program that accelerates keyboard input by looking
at what you have typed and showing you a list of words that start with it.
At the touch of a single key, Keycache will "type" the rest of the word.
Whenever you type a word that Keycache doesn't know about, it will be
stored in memory and displayed the next time you type something that could
match it. Keycache increases keyboard input speed the same way a disk
cache speeds up disk accesses.

Keycache is especially useful for users who
--Have learning disabilities that make spelling and word selection difficult
--Have physical disabilities that slow down keyboard usage
--Are using alternative input techniques like scanning
--Are simply slow hunt-and-peck typists

Keycache was designed to work with almost any program that uses keyboard
input. You can create your own vocabulary lists (for example, for writing
about specialized topics). Keycache takes up only as much memory as you
want it to, and can be used in conjunction with other TSRs like macro
programs or alternative input programs.

DVPSV11.ZIP Full featured print spooler for DESQview

More features than outlined below

     PHAST SPOOL
     ~~~~~~~~~~~
        PS is specifically designed to run in a DV window.  It doesn't
     use any hardware interrupts and uses less than 11k of your memory.
     PS requires approx. 50% less processing time than PRINT.COM!  It
     achieves some of its efficiency by writing directly to the printer
     ports*.  PS can run in a very small timeslice, if necessary, with
     DV's foreground/background ticks ratio set to 15 or 20 to 1.
        In addition to being a very efficient spooler, PS is a power-
     ful printer control program with user-defined "EZ" commands.  Con-
     sider the following PS entry.
                    MYFILE.TXT #5 EL DR CO
        This would cause 5 copies (#5) of MYFILE.TXT to be printed in
     elite/draft/condensed mode.  This example assumes the use of one
     of the included Command Definition Files (CDF's).  CDF's are used
     to customize the program for ANY printer.  They are created using
     any text editor and information from your printer manual.
The LDS Church also uses the Bible as scripture and (in English-speaking
Summary: Reposted by Keith Petersen
Status: OR
I have uploaded to SIMTEL20:
pd1:<msdos.handicap>
ACCDOS12.ZIP    AccessDOS screen/mouse/sound access utilities
This is version 1.0 of AccessDOS, a package of public domain
utilities to allow easier access for the handicapped.   Support for
work on AccessDOS was provided in part by IBM Corporation and by
the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research
(NIDRR), U.S. Department of Education.  The software was developed
by The Trace Research and Development Center, Madison, Wisconsin.
The single program consists of several sections:
1. StickyKeys:  Allows the control/shift/alt keys to be used with one
   finger.
2. MouseKeys: Allows people who cannot handle the mouse but who can
   press keys on the keyboard to perform all of the functions of the mouse.
3. ToggleKeys: Beeps different tones whenever the Numlock, caps lock or
   the scroll lock key are pressed.
4. RepeatKeys: Adjust how fast the auto-repeat works or turn it off entirely.
5. SlowKeys: Will prevent a key as "pressed" unless it has been held down
   for a specified amount of time.
6. BounceKeys: Will not accept two presses on the same key in a row unless
   they are far enough part in time.
7. SerialKeys: Allows control of keyboard and mouse functions from a special
   input device hooked up to the serial port.
8. ShowSounds: Gives a visual indicator of when the computer has beeped,
   either with a musical note in a corner of the screen or with a screen
   flash.
AccessDOS has a timeout feature so that if the keyboard and mouse have
been unused for a specified amount of time, the AccessDOS features will
be turned off.  This allows people who do not need AccessDOS can then
use the terminal without having to manually turn AccessDOS off.
The document states that this software can be freely distributed
as long as the documentation remains with it.
FORCHEK1.ZIP    Check Fortran for semantic errors;req math prc
This is the port of FORCHEK a fortran checker to IBMPCs running MSDOS.
The makefile is setup for MSC6.0 and GNUMAKE 3.58, any unix MAKE for
an IBMPC should do. You may meed to set the path for the compiler and
the linker in the makefile to reflect the SETUP for your site.  The
forchek.ps2 is the original postscript version of the document that
I ftp'ed from 'research.att.com' ( login as netlib ).  This document
was rejected by our university's postscript printer so I obtained the
forchek.dvi file from the author 'beebe@utah.math.edu' and converted
it to the postscript file forchek.ps1.
    Also included is forchek3.exe (386 version).  This was compiled
using DJGPP ( Port of G++ to MSDOS ).  To use it you need the the DOS
extender go32.exe (included) which needs to be on your search path.
You *must* have a 386 machine running MSDOS to use forchek3.exe.
    To run the programs you need an IBMPC with a MATH COPROCESSOR.
I have uploaded to SIMTEL20;
DMPPFM14.ZIP    WIN3: Printer PS/PCL Font Metrics dumper, v1.4
DumpPfm version 1.4 is a Printer Font Metrics Dumper which uses the
information of the Printers and Fonts toolkit manual that can be found
in the Microsoft DDK to disasseble the PFM file.  This way, bare bones
PFM files could be dumped, but not the PFM files that were shipped
with PostScript and PCL fonts.
After browsing some other manuals (Aldus, Adobe) and some binaries
(PCL and PostScript drivers), it appeared that at least two different
PFM files were used. A warning was added into the program.
This means DumpPfm is not perfect, there might be some things that I
overlooked. When I find time, I'll take a look at the PCL and PostScript
driver sources to make it better.
Subject: DELP.ZIP/DELPX02.ZIP - Fast non-iterative multi-exponential fitting
Summary: Reposted by Keith Petersen
Status: OR
I have uploaded to SIMTEL20:
DELP.ZIP        Fast non-iterative multi-exponential fitting  (4568 bytes)
DELPX02.ZIP     Data analysis suite incorporating DELP.PAS    (138990 bytes)
Here is a description of the algorithm
  DELP is an algorithm devised by Dr J Martin, King' College London
and implemented by DJ Maconochie.  It's purpose is to fit sums of
closely spaced exponentials to noisy data.  Data must be in the form
of an array of equally spaced data points, and may be over-sampled and
un-filtered.  Many thousands of data points may be fitted in seconds.
The algorithm relies on:
 a) the use of an orthogonal polynomial series (Legendre polynomials)
to represent the data in an ecomonical fashion
 b) the observation that a sum of n exponentials is the solution to a
linear homogeneous differential equation with constant coefficients.
Because a l.h.d.e is linear in its coefficients, a fit to the data
may be obtained using a "least squares" approach that involves the
solution of a set of linear equations- a simple matrix problem.
 c) the special properties of Legendre polynomials simplify the
calculation of the elements of the matrix from which the coefficients
of the Characteristic Equation are found.  The roots of the
characteristic equation are the exponential rate constants we require.
  DELP.PAS is a demonstration program in PASCAL showing the
calculation of the exponential rate constants (the novel part)
  VIEWMENU.EXE is an analysis suite implementing DELP, and including
useful additional routines.
Subject: MARKV13.ZIP - Mark V. Shaney, text paraphraser
Summary: Reposted by Keith Petersen
Status: OR
I have uploaded to SIMTEL20:
pd1:<msdos.education>
MARKV13.ZIP     Mark V. Shaney, text paraphraser
Mark V. Shaney produces a confused imitation of style and contents of
a piece of writing.  Mark reads the original text and builds a "word
probability table" that reflects the probability of a word following a
sequence of words.  In output mode, Mark will generate random text
weighed by the probabilities in this table (a so-called Markov chain,
hence Mark's name).  Since Mark considers punctuation as part of
the word, he is likely to produce grammatical sentences, albeit a
caricature of the original text.  Mark V. Shaney is in the same league
with the famous ELIZA and RACTER programs, and shows that you don't
need AI for "almost human" writing.  This implementation of Mark V.
Shaney allows you to vary the "randomness" of the text output and
supports huge probability tables in expanded memory or on disk.
Version 1.0 of this program was posted on comp.binaries.ibm.pc in
June 91.
New in Version 1.3
     *  Text reading and generating is slightly faster than in V1.0. A
        "percent done" counter displays the progress of text reading.
     *  "Keywords" can be specified to focus Mark V. Shaney's ramblings on a
        particular topic.
     *  A "maximum word length" command line parameter /L# was added. /L1 for
        example tells Mark to create a frequency table for single characters.
        Small values for L create interesting "foreign language" versions of
        the original text.
DVIPS386.ZIP    Convert a TeX DVI file to PostScript on 386
This ZIP file contains executables for an MSDOS 386 machine. They were
compiled with DJGPP.  To use these programs you *need* a 386 MSDOS
machine with a MATH COPROCESSOR and a DOS extender go32.exe (included).
You also need the font library DVIPSLIB.ZIP.
The PC versions of the programs are available separately in the file
DVIPS54.ZIP.
DVIPS386 should be prefered on 386 machines because it virtual memory
and is much less likely to choke the translator. I had two DVI files
that I had problems with when I used DVIPS54.ZIP.  The program simply
run out of memory while allocating raster.  They both worked with the
programs in DVIPS386.
The source files in DVIPS386 were obtained from DVIPS54.
SYSLOG.ZIP      DESQview-specific system activity logger
One feature of mainframe computers that is missing in the microcomputer
world is a system log.  On the monster mainframes every event
that is potentially interesting is logged.  This provides a
central location for status messages and error messages.  Until
recently, micros didn't really need something like this because they
were running one program at a time, usually with the operator right
there watching the screen.  Even if the program wasn't being watching
when something went wrong the number of error logs that needed to be
checked was minimized by fact that the user usually knew what was
running.  With the growing number of micro systems running
multitasking software the need for such a log facility is becoming
greater.
SysLog provides this feature for the DESQview environment.  When
run, SysLog opens a window and waits for other programs to send log
messages to it.  When a message is received, it is displayed to the
window along with a timestamp.  There is an option to maintain a log
file containing all incoming messages.  Messages sent to SysLog can be
marked as being urgent.  When an urgent message is received SysLog
will highlight the message and move its window to the top of
DESQview's window stack.
JUST1V12.ZIP    Prevents run of simultaneous copy of pgm in DV
JUSTONE is a program designed for the DESQView (tm) multi-tasking
environment.  It can be used to prevent multiple instances of the same
program from running, or it can be used to prevent contention from
programs that use the same resources.
JUSTONE makes use of the Shared Program facility of DESQView.  In case
you aren't familiar with it, here is a brief explanation:
Most programs run under DESQView need to have their own address space
to ensure that they do not collide with each other.  This is because
most DOS programs don't need to communicate directly with other
programs.  However, under DESQView, you may want to be able to have
two different programs communicate directly while they are running.
The Shared Program feature provides this facility.
A Shared Program is a program written specifically for DESQView that
is loaded when you start up a program that makes reference to it in
its PIF file (the Change Program screen in DESQView).  When a second
program is run that makes reference to the same Shared Program, rather
than using up additional memory resources loading a second copy of it,
DESQView simply gives the second program access to the same copy as
the first program.  If this sounds like it might confuse things, it
very well could, except that DESQView gives the Shared Program clues
about which program is running, so that it can keep things straight.
Shared Programs are specific to DESQView and cannot be run from the
command line.
JUSTONE runs as a Shared Program.  Each time you run a program that
calls out JUSTONE, DESQView gives JUSTONE control just long enough for
it to look at the Shared Data from the PIF file.  This data field is
an ASCII field where JUSTONE expects to find the name of a semaphore.
It then searches its list to see if any other program is currently
using that semaphore, and if so, it displays an error message and
switches to the original instance of the program.  If there is no
other program using the semaphore, JUSTONE creates a semaphore and the
program is allowed to run.  When the program exits, DESQView removes
the semaphore from its list, so that next time, the program can run
again.
Subject: PCXDMP37.ZIP - TSR dumps EGA, VGA & SVGA screen to PCX files
Summary: Reposted by Keith Petersen
Status: OR
I have uploaded to SIMTEL20:
pd1:<msdos.graphics>
PCXDMP37.ZIP    TSR dumps EGA, VGA & SVGA screen to PCX files
PCXDUMP is a memory-resident program to dump a graphic screen to a
disk file in the PCX-format. As this format is widely used (simple and
fast to code and decode), I have chosen this format.  Since it's a
resident program, it stay in memory when you run it,
Currently the program handles EGA, VGA and SVGA modes, that is:
no Hercules or CGA modes, sorry!
but full EGA & VGA support:
     320 x 200 x  16 colors
     640 x 200 x  16 colors
     640 x 350 x   2 colors
     640 x 350 x  16 colors
and full standard VGA support:
     640 x 480 x   2 colors
     640 x 480 x  16 colors
     320 x 200 x 256 colors
and if you have any of these SVGA-cards, you will be able
to use their SVGA-modes as well !!
      - ATI-wonder       (up to 1024x768x256)
      - Trident          (up to 1024x768x256)
      - Genoa            (up to 1024x768x16, 800x600x256)
      - Paradise         (up to 1024x768x16, 800x600x256)
      - OAK-067          (up to 1024x768x16, 800x600x256)
If you own a mouse, you will be able to cut out part of the screen
with a on-screen frame, controlled by the mouse.
The size of the frame will be shown in upperleft corner.
SNEWS112.ZIP    Usenet news add-on for UUPC/extended
'Simple NEWS' is an news add-on for UUPC.  It is intended for use as a
leaf node and offers:
  - Subject-threaded news reading.
  - All instances of a cross-posted ar marked as read.
  - Separate rc files for each user, which record the individual
    articles that you have seen.
  - Usual range of response facilities: follow-up news, reply by mail,
    forward by mail, save article/thread to disk.
  - Articles are now stored in one file per newsgroup, rather than
    one file per article.  This results in an enormous saving (up to 3:1)
    in disk space on disks with with a default cluster size of 4kb per
    cluster.
  - Processing of batched/compressed news only.
  - Posting - Posts are unbatched and uncompressed.  You can only post
    to your 'mailserv'.  You cannot feed another site. If you are looking
    for something to feed other sites why not try Waffle?
SSPELL01.ZIP    TurboC++ or Unix C source for Unix Spell clone
The C source code for a public domain spell checker similar to the
Unix spell program.  The features of this program are that it is
supplied with complete C source code, uses a simply sorted list as its
dictionary, is NOT memory greedy, uses a caching algorithm to minimise
disk access, and provides a configurable suffix and prefix engine that
is modified without recompiling the program.  The source code will
compile under TurboC++, and several Unix variants.
Subject: PRINDIR8.ZIP - COM/LPT port redir. to any other port or file
Summary: Reposted by Keith Petersen
Status: OR
I have uploaded to SIMTEL20:
pd1:<msdos.printer>
PRINDIR8.ZIP    COM/LPT port redir. to any other port or file
PRINDIR is a TSR program that will allow you to redirect the output of
any standard COM or LPT port to any other COM or LPT port, as well as
to disk files and to the display.  In addition, it allows you to
specify the full path and file name for disk file redirection, thus
it is possible to redirect to any file or logical device.
The main program offers an easy to use Popup Parameter Menu from which
the user can quickly and easily set program options.  It can make use
of expanded and extended memory on systems so equipped, making its
conventional memory footprint even smaller.  It also includes several
small support utilities to help you customize it to meet your needs.
PRINDIR is fast, intuitive, easy to use, and can be utilized to solve
many different types of problems.  Only your imagination will limit
what you can do with it.
Message-Id: <Z16FaB2w164w@cybrspc>
I have uploaded to SIMTEL20:
pd1:<msdos.waffle>
NUEXPIRE.ZIP    Perl expire for MS-DOS Waffle BBS
NUEXPIRE is a Perl expire for MS-DOS Waffle systems.  It supports all
information in the /waffle/system/usenet file, and will expire on the
basis of time, or read a user's join file and expire read articles.
NUEXPIRE also implements graded expiry.  Directory names are truncated
to 8 characters during expiry, to support Novell networks.  NUEXPIRE is
placed into the public domain.
