Hi everyone,

Has anyone ever tried to convert a Sputnik 1 to a quad line kite?

Is it a feasible option or would it be better to use a proven quad plan?

Presumably the hardest part of any conversion would be the bridling for 
the brake lines.

I agree here, I saw a quaded sputnik on Fano wich was really deformed,
even in straight flight.  It had the advantages of a quad though, a
better upwind course and faster turns.  Deformation however is
something an wing/foil does not want.  
I also saw a Paua, now that's a good quad design.  The brake lines
don't attach to the trailing edge, but somewere in the middle.
Deformation is minor I guess.

I have no experience with the Sputnik 1 but I quadlined my Sputnik 4 (5.2 m^2).
I'm satisfied with it as it launches and relaunches very easily and it's easier
to recover the Spuntik once the wingtips colapse or other strange things happen.
You could also use the braking-lines to decrease turning radius, but I tend to
fly the quadlined Sput like a standard bridled one and only use the braking-lines
to recover/relaunch. Therefore you don't loose so much speed while turning the
kite and speed of the kite is what generates the required pull for buggying.
Turning the kite by applying some braking forces with the braking lines will slow
down the Sput so that you will end up with very low pull and therefore very low
speed of the buggy after turning.

This is an fairly easy thing: Just lay out the Sputnik and sew some loops to the
trailing edge at the end of those profiles where the bridle is connected. Then
guess the length of braking lines, knot them together and testfly the Sputnik.
You will easily see which of the braking lines are to short as the trailing
edge will be deformed when braking. Make the appropriate lines a little longer
and after 10 to 20 minutes and maybe two or three readjustments, you will have
a very nice quadlined Sputnik. Attach the braking lines to the loops at the
trailing edge with a larks head knot so you could remove them very quickly to
convert back to a 2-liner.

Almost no deformation, best upwind kite they ever made says Peter.  Flys
more like a rev than a quad-foil.

and make a new quad instead. That way you dont risk damaging an already 
functional kite (in the words of Yorkie Paul: If it aint broken don't fix 
it!).

Send a cheque to 'Chris Sands' for 5 english pounds for his kite plan 
pack - which includes all the bridle plans for kites (quads) sized 
2m,2.5m,3m,4m,5m,6m (I.e. 6m squared - BIG!!! equivalent to a skytiger Hi 
60 in dimensions). It also includes a rib profile for each size and is a 
total BARGAIN.

I have used it to build a 3m sq. and 6m sq. kite and they both flew first 
time, so put that in yer pipe and smoke it.

Just mention me in your letter to him, and I'm sure he'll respond as 
quickly for you as he did for me.

It got beaten by lots of Mosquito's, Q-comp's, Libre foils etc. during
the race.  Perhaps the windconditions weren't that good for the Paua,
or the combination of driver-wind-conditions was wrong.  I saw it a
day or 2 earlier and it beated every other buggier around.

Peter said that was the case, so you can bet that he has already modified
the design.  It is great that there is competition taking place among the
power foil builders, better kites will be the results.
