If anyone is interested there is an IRC channel on undernet.org called
"kites." I'll be on around 9:00 P.M. PST Monday 4/29/96. Wanted to
invite any that may be interested to join in.

Hmm.. that would split up the kiters over two kites channels on IRC since
there already was one on EFnet.... I'm sure that is not wat you wanted
to accomplish...

(Now I'm sure we met via rec.kites Robin... :-))

You are right. That is not what I wanted to accomplish. In fact I
"ran into" a fellow kite flyer on undernet. We were on a channel
unrelated to kite flying. She set up the channel so that we could
both go to it and talk and possibly be joined by other kiteflyers. Is
it possible that there are flyers that don't have access to EFnet but
do to undernet? Would it be improper to have a second channel on
another network? I don't honestly know the answers to these
questions. Since this posting I found out about the channel on EFnet
and that has been where I have been going to when using IRC. Have run
into people that I haven't seen for a while.

Hmmm, that may have sounded worse than intended. I knew that you
did not want to do that. We just met on #kites on EFnet that morning...

As far as I know people having access to an undernet (or dalnet,
or whatevernet) server, will also be able to access EFnet servers.
(Maybe some internet provider with peculiar ideas might limit this, but
that's not done as far as I know).

>Would it be improper to have a second channel on another network?

No, it would not be improper, it would just split the amount of people
interested in the same subject. (same arguments hold as in the
"let's split rec.kites" discussion).

The reason for choosing EFnet was that some people that were familiar
with IRC, already were "tuned in" to other channels on IRC that are
available on EFnet.
Personally I would like a net that suffers less from net-splits....

Robin, Fill me in. There's an internet and now and undernet, is there an
outernet that I'm not aware of? :o) By the way thanks for the nice words
about our book.
Are you coming to the Seattle Kite Festival at Magnuson Park on June 16,
1996?
We need lots of kite flyers to show the city of Seattle what we are all
about. Everyone is invited to come for the big party. That's what it is.
We don't ask any one for donations, there aren't any competitions, we
give prizes away, and donate all the proceeds of contributions to the
Northwest Brainchild Foundation.

EFnet is also difficult to access from the UK

Undernet is no problem

Many UK efnet servers in the UK need Authorisation to access them
Undernet is available to all

Let me say what I know (or think I know) about this. If anyone has
better information please post it because I am pretty new to using IRC
and am still learning. (Barressi jump on in!) Undernet is the name
of a server that handles IRC (Internet Relay Chat). There is actually
a us.undernet.org and a uk.undernet.org. I am not sure if people on
both servers are talking to each other or just to the people that log
into the individual servers.
It seems that more and more kite flyers are joining the conversations
on efnet. There are many servers as part of efnet. I will try to
find out the addresses of them if there is interest. I have found out
since this thread started that everyone cannot use all servers. A
server in Texas that I have tried to get on will not allow anybody
>From Compuserve. I am using Sprynet which is part of Compuserve. It
doesn't know the difference and won't let me on. However, other efnet
servers do allow me. None of the efnet servers allow customers of
Eskimo North on. They allow bots (don't ask cause I don't know) so
they have been banned.
It all comes back to the concern about having two kite channels on
IRC on different servers. Since not everyone has access to all the
servers I think it would be okay. If people can get onto an efnet
server they should and join the #kites channel there. If they don't
have access they can try undernet and give it a try there. At this
time there is more kite activity on efnet.
