Okay, rec.kiters, this one has been bothering me for hours.

A co-worker asked me this morning where the phrase "Go fly a kite"
originated. She was quite tongue-in-cheek about it, but it started me
thinking. How can I reconcile what I consider a "serious" pastime with a
derisive colloquialism? Should I be offended when someone tells me to go
fly a kite, or should I simply take 'em up on it?

Anyway, if anyone knows where we get this phrase, please share with me...

Don't be offended, most folks don't know that kite flying can be
serious. Once I brought in a whole bunch of kites to work to show
folks that it wasn't just dime store stuff anymore.

Usually when someone tells me to "go fly a kite", I just groan and
then leave...

Consider another colloquialism: "Go jump in a lake." On a hot summer
day, many, if not most, of us would consider that a pleasant thing to
do. Never mind for the moment that most of us wouldn't want to do it in
the dead of winter.

Or this one, "Take a hike." I love to hike. That's one of the reasons I
live in the mountains.

I'd be glad to take anybody up on any one of these three. Too bad nobody
ever tells me to "go ski a few runs." I'd do that one in a shot, too. :-)

Think how shocked someone would be if they told you to go fly a kite,
and you told them, "That's a great idea! I think I'll just do that!"

Or was it Ben Franklin's wife's response to his comment about not getting
enough tail?

"Go fly a kite" is hardly worth getting offended about, but if it's a
windy day and you've got the time, take them up on it!!

Hello Jon
can't really make heads or tails from your message but I'm sure you had the
right idea. Just joking. How is everything going. If you need anything let
met know. We need to get the regristration forms out ASAP! The longer you
wait the harder it is to get contestants. I'm going to Emporia, KS for an
event up there on fathers da
y. You do know that you are now in conflict with the Texas SkSkyrightes Kite
clubs annual picnic. Don't worry though you have enough contestants in your
area. Just get the regristration forms out.
Call me if you need anything.
