Subject: Special Hello There

FROM NEXUS-IBA, in Milano, Italy:

** "HELLO THERE" Special Edition of Oct. 2, 1994 **
(on the air between Oct. 1 and Oct. 7, 1994)

** VOA's "120 Day Plan" for the consolidation of International Broadcasting **

| As explained in an interview with VOA personnel, this plan could bring to
| the closure of VOA and RFE/RL sites around the world. Resources will be
| diverted to make more emphasis on the programme production and distribution
| by other media other than VOA's Shortwave stations (transcription, DBS,
| leased time on local AM and FM stations).

Hi There from Milano, Italy:

We are back on the air with our regular listeners' contact program after the
summer break. Your comments and receptions reports, and questions are always
welcome at our PO Box address or via e-mail for the usual edition of the
"Hello There". This week we cross the Atlantic, and speak with John Vodenik,
Technician and Unions Representative at VOA relay station in Bethany, Ohio,
who explains what VOA may have in mind for the future, as far as Shortwave
transmissions around the world are concerned.

Official VOA representatives in Washington declined to comment on the plan,
so we are passing on what news is available at the moment, hoping that more
information becomes available "first hand" in the coming weeks.

As Jeff White, of Radio Miami Int'l said in an interview on the HT a few
months ago: "similiar decisions may be more than welcomed by smaller stations
like ours, as this will open more HF frequencies, and we will be able to
attract more listeners on shortwave" (grin).

Surely, we feel sorry for all those who may loose their job, and wish they
could continue broadcasting to the world.

"H E L L O T H E R E !"

One of NEXUS-IBA's most popular non-relay programmes, a listener contact show
where we acknowledge reception reports and comments on programmes, as well as
present items of general interests to the Shortwave listeners, including books
and magazine reviews. We also encourage active listener participation by
inviting everyone to send us a cassette recording telling us about themselves
and where they live. Or, as an immediate means of filing reception reports or
personal participation, our telephone service is available 24 hours-a-day,
seven days-a-week (+39-2-266 6971). Like all Shortwave broadcasters today,
IRRS-Shortwave very much encourages listeners to let us know how they are
receiving us, but equally importantly, we also need to hear their programme
comments, which are very valuable in helping our members produce better
and more attractive programming.
