Finland is a republic and the President is Dr. Mauno Koivisto. Total area is 339,000 sq.km, one tenth of this being water, one tenth farmland and a good half forest. Finland lies between the 60th and the 70th parallels; its greatest length is 1160 km and it is 540 km across the widest point. The population of Finland is 5 million. The population density is 15 inhabitants per square kilometre. The official languages are Finnish (93.5 %) and Swedish (6.2 %). English is the leading foreign language taught in schools. Finland is a land of water - over 180000 lakes and islands. In summertime Finland is the land of the midnight sun and in wintertime it is the land of snow and Santa Claus. EDXC 92 takes place in late August. The weather can vary from 15 centigrades with cloud and rain up to 25 centigrades sunshine (which we have ordered of course!). If you have an opportunity to tour in Finland in connection with your visit to the EDXC 92, use it. You can visit Lapland or the lake district. In case you prefer cities, take at look at Helsinki and Turku. At the end of August the summer holiday season is already over, so tourist attractions are not crowded. All campingsites are open and most hotels apply their reduced summer prices. We wish you an enjoyable stay in Finland! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TAMPERE Tampere has 180,000 inhabitants and it is the second city in Finland. You may know that the previous EDXC Conference held in Finland, in June 1987, attracted an unprecedented attendance. Altogether more than 300 participants gathered from all over Europe to attend the biggest DX meeting ever held anywhere. The organizing committee is partly manned by the same people as in 1987. Therefore, the organization is in reliable hands. Join us in Tampere in August! The 25th Anniversary of the European DX Council will be celebrated in connection with EDXC 92. There will be items in the programme to commemorate the EDXC history of the past quarter of a century. Many EDXC personalities will be attending the conference. As a shortwave listener you can enjoy the conference programme which deals with international broadcasting in the past and in the future. You may participate in workshops studying the development trends in the international radio scene. You can also meet many famous radio voices from international stations all over the world. If you prefer medium waves you can share the recent experiences of the Finnish MW experts whose achievements are recognized worldwide. Special MW workshops treat the medium wave subjects with profound expertise. Many of the best experts on DXpeditions to Lapland will meet at the EDXC 92. If you ever plan to join one of these Arctic DXing events here you have the best chance ever to consult with DXers who are old hands in this thrilling experience. If you are a broadcaster you are able to meet your colleagues of other international radio stations. Besides, you will have an interested and interesting audience of critical and well-informed listeners of international stations. You will have an opportunity of distributing your material and message among listeners and you are able to get immediate personal feedback from your audience. The many outstanding DXers and club leaders attending may provide you with interesting and informed opinions for your eventual interviews. There will be no other annual broadcasters' and DXers' meetings which would give you a similar choice! EDXC 92 is a joint venture. It is simultaneously the EDXC Conference and the FDXA Summer Meeting. The organizers expect an attendance of some 150 DXers from Finland and an attendance of 150 DXers and broadcasters from abroad. The conference language is English. Only few items will be in Finnish. The EDXC 92 conference has a broadcasting station of its own, operating under a special licence. The station is called Radioworld. The frequency will be 103.8 MHz. It will be on the air during the whole conference. The programme is aimed to the public but will also include some of the conference highlights. An opportunity to visit the studio will be included in the conference programme. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- THE ORGANIZERS The Finnish DX Association is the leading DX organization in Finland. The membership is approximately 1700 members. The FDXA was founded in 1972 when three of the most important DX clubs in Finland joined their forces to create one central DX organization in Finland. These clubs were Finnish DX Club (founded in 1954), Suomen DX-Kuuntelijat (founded in 1958) and The Friendly DX Club (founded in 1970). The Finnish DX Association is the publisher of DX-Kuuntelija, a DX magazine which comes out 10 times a year. DX-Kuuntelija is a well-known DX magazine, not only in Finland but also abroad because of its outstanding quality. It is 90% in Finnish, the rest being published in Swedish and English. Normally the magazine has 52 pages. The first part of the magazine is made of articles and the second part, called Sunspot, is made of loggings, news and statistics. The event of the year is the FDXA Summer Meeting which has been organized since 1963. As a rule some 100-200 Finnish and foreign DXers, broadcasters and radio dealers attend the meeting. The DX Club of Tampere was founded in 1967. Since then it has been one of the most active local branches of the FDXA. The activities include meetings and DXpeditions. Besides, a local newsletter called Kantoaalto (The Carrier) is being published. ----------------------------------------------------------------------
