Does the opportunity to join a growing research and technology
organization and develop leading-edge software technology that has the
potential to significantly transform how a large company like Xerox
researches, develops, and manufactures its products sound interesting to
you? If you have proven expertise in design theory, concurrent
engineering, or advanced software applications please contact us. Our
group studies existing modeling and simulation activities and works with
the participants to develop new processes and computational tools in
order to foster increased concurrency, information reuse, and more
effective and widespread analytical engineering methods. This requires a
multi-disciplinary collection of highly talented and motivated
individuals with backgrounds drawn from engineering, physics,
computational mathematics, and computer science.

We are currently seeking candidates for two positions.

(1) Software Engineer with strong computer science skills and background
in any combination of the following areas:
     - Simulation environments
     - Software reuse (in this case, models, tools, and data)
     - Interoperability and distributed systems
(e.g., OMG CORBA, Concurrent Engineering frameworks)
     - Databases
     - Human-computer interaction

Candidates should have an M.S. or equivalent experience in Computer
Science (preferred) or relevant engineering discipline. Analytic
engineering skills are a definite plus but are not required; the
primary emphasis is on computer science skills and strength in
    developing C, C++, Unix applications.

(2) Design Theory and Methodology / Concurrent Engineering research,
with particular emphasis on evaluation of existing design and
analysis processes and measuring the effects of new processes and
computational tools on factors such as quality, time, and overall
    effort.

Candidates must have an M.S. or Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering,
Computer Science or relevant engineering discipline. Strong research
    record or experience is required.

The positions offer exciting challenges, wide variety, and the potential
to have a significant impact. To apply, send resume and any additional
information to:

Subject: WANTED: Opinions on Simulation Hardware

Hi -

Anyone have any experience, first hand or otherwise, with specific
hardware made for high-performance simulation of dynamic, continuous
systems? I would be particularly interested in feedback (no pun
intended) from people with experience on the real-time simulators made
by Applied Dynamics International (e.g., the System 100 and later),
or Harris.

Did it meet your needs? Ease of use/setup/modification? Quality of
customer support/documentation? Price/performance? Would you buy it
again? Etc?

I am conducting an evaluation of specific hardware vs a general purpose
workstation approach, and any and all opinions, ideas, strategies,
stories, gushing praise or gripes/flames are welcome. :-)

Thanks for your time. You can either post a reply or contact me
directly at e-mail address below.

I have been working on a computer simulation and am in need of a simple weather
generating and managing model. Something just a little better than the one used
in Carriers at War and similar computer games is what I am after. One like the
model in SimEarth with all of its variables would do the job very nicely if it
could have a higher resolution. I'm open to almost any suggestion and am ready
to experiment with anything I can get and work with.

ANY information with be VERY MUCH APPRECIATED even if it seems trivial or on too
big (supercomputer) or too small (pencil and graph paper) scale!

Greetings from Japan!

I have a couple of questions, and this group seems like the
appropriate place to ask:

(1) Is anyone doing any computer network simulation using COMDISCO
Systems, Inc.'s BONeS PlanNet? What do you think of the package?
Documentation? Examples? Are you making good use of the software? Do
you have any advice for a 'beginner' (I almost have my B.Sc.)?

(2) I need some good books on computer modeling/simulation/analysis. I
know there are lots of good books out there that focus on queueing
theory and such, but I am looking for something more applied (ie.
delay, throughput, collisions, retransmissions, and how to improve all
of those).

Thanks in advance for any help. Please reply directly to me at:

Cutkosky & Englemore describe the application of PACT to the distributed simulation
of artifacts (such as a car), whose parts are designed concurrently within multiple
departments. The local models at the department level can be coupled for simulation,
where each department contributes its own simulator.

CONFERENCE OVERVIEW & AIM

Over the last two years since CEEDA 91, much has been
written on the subject of Concurrent Engineering and the
place of design Automation within its implementation. Global
companies have learnt to reap the benefits of timely
investments, whereas others have fallen by the way, either
to slow the change or else not committed enough to underpin
the change with real action. Anyone associated with new
product development, will know that the new paradigm for
success is "Provide the most value for the lowest cost in
the least amount of time" - G.Stalk Jnr, Boston Consulting
Group.

To achieve quicker time to market, product design,
development, production and manufacture must be done
concurrently to maximize the time available. By using multi-
disciplined product teams in collaboration with Information
Technology and Electronic Design Automation Tools, the total
cycle time from conception to launch is substantially
reduced.

Down stream processes such as Sales, Marketing, Support,
Logistics and Maintenance are also monitored, evaluated and
brought in to the total product development to ensure that
customer requirements and engineering requirements have
definite correlation. Use of Quality Function Deployment in
product development plots what the customer wants against
the how the product will be built.

The mix of customer attributes and engineering
characteristics in QFD promotes more interaction between
multi-disciplined teams , and more importantly propagates
quality throughout the design cycle.

CEEDA 94 aims to identify the progress that has been made in
Concurrent Engineering in the past two years, and the
possible direction this philosophy will take in the future.

Sponsored by:

Master's Programme in Systems Science, University of Ottawa
Ottawa-Carleton Research Institute (OCRI)

OBJECTIVES:

To gather together practitioners, tool makers, and theoreticians to discuss the
development of computer aided tools and environments based on system theoretic
concepts applicable to complex engineering and scientific problems. Aspects
that deal with the system level of the design process will be of special
interest. The Workshop will have eminent invited speakers, presentations of
refereed papers, panel sessions, and software demonstrations. Papers are
encouraged in the foundations as well as the applications of CAST:

Research and development in the foundations of CAST such as new theoretical
results and related methods which support systems technology, implementation of
systems methods and their integration in design environments. Topics include:
. Environments and tools for CAST (intelligent, knowledge-based,
    object-oriented),
. Concepts and methods for complexity reduction,
. Computer aided design of complex systems,
. Computer-based systems engineering,
. Fuzzy systems,
. Goal-oriented system models for CAST (anticipatory systems, autopoietic
systems, evolving systems, self-organizing systems and self-reproducing
    systems),
. Learning system models for CAST,
. Systems concepts (quantitative, qualitative; deterministic, uncertainty)
    in computer aided modelling, model analysis, and model transformation;
simulation, and other types of behaviour generation, and
. Reliability issues and CAST.

Presentation of successful applications of CAST in:
. Software systems engineering,
. Telecommunications,
. Autonomous intelligent systems and robotics,
. Very Large Scale Integration (VLSI),
. Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM),
. Ecological systems, and
. Information technology in business, government and health care.

You are invited to submit, for refereeing, four copies of an extended abstract
(double spaced, four pages) by 15 November 1993 to the General Chair. Proposals
for organization of Sessions (4 articles) and Panels are welcome; please
contact the Program Chair by 15 October 1993.

It is anticipated that all full papers will be refereed for possible
publication in the Springer Lecture Notes Series in Computer Science as was
done in the three previous Workshops. Only papers that have been presented will
be included in the Workshop book.

Attendance is limited and early registration is advised.
