Subject: Need help with statistical modelling problem

I am currently researching possible statistical models for the
optimization of branch cash holdings and the forecast of demands that
might be placed on such holdings as it applies to the Canadian
banking industry.

The motivation behind this work arises from the recent changes to the
Canadian Bank Act allowing primary reserve requirements to be phased
out at which time a minimum cash holdings will no longer have to be
maintained at bank branches (it is therefore in the Canadian banking
industries interest to reduce bank cash holdings to a minimum as
these funds are currently non-earning assets).

Specificly I'm looking for a statistical model (ideally it would be
already computerized) which will both optimize and forecast cash
holdings for each individual branch BY DENOMINATION, as well as being
useful in:

1) evaluating the feasibility of sharing cash between branches and
automated cash machines,
2) evaluating the feasibility of 'just in time' versus fixed schedule
cash delivery service to branches (if fixed schedule I would also
need to assess which days each branch should order their cash
shipment).

Main questions:

1) Have any products been developed which focus specifically on
branch cash holdings?? (Note: there does exist several systems which
focus on automated cash machines. These systems however are
inappropriate for branch cash modelling).

2) The closest inventory comparison to branch cash would be
stock/bond/futures/options trading models and perishable goods
models. Do any EXPERT systems exist to optimize/forecast such
inventories which could conceivably be modified for my specific
purpose??

Please address all replies to terry@solar.me.queensu.ca or if I can't
be reached there for whatever reason please post. Thankyou in
advance.

P.S. I plan to post this in comp.simulation, sci.econ (what the hell
might as well), sci.math.stat and comp.ai. If anyone has suggestions
for other news groups I should look into or why I should not post to
the above news groups please write me at the above address.

terry

Subject: Simulation on Macs

You can get a fully working SIMULA compiler for the Mac for nothing from Lund
Software. It is the same as the one they produce for SUN etc. and works fine.

E-mail to Boris.Magnusson@dna.lth.se will get you the details.

SIMULA has a built in package called class Simulation to handle discrete event
simulation and the Mac version comes with some examples of how to use Mac
windowing etc.

If you need help with SIMULA you could read one of several books, such as

R.J. Pooley, "Introduction to Programming with SIMULA", pub. Blackwell
Scientific, ISBN 0-632-01422-9

G.M. Birtwistle et al "SIMULA BEGIN", Chartwell Bratt

I would be happy to help if you had specific problems.

If you send me your address I will send you copies of a couple of tech reports
on the Experimenter tool, which was produced as part of the ESPRIT II IMSE

The Experimenter was a sort of meta-modelling tool, which allowed systematic
exploitation of models and their inter-connection. We showed it working with
process based simulation (DEMOS and SIMULA), Petri net (GreatSPN), queueing
networks (QNAP 2) and workload capture (Workser) tools, with suitably modified
interfaces. It isn't available except under PCTE and SUN View, but it has a
lot of nice ideas.

 > KY CHOW

Your message doesn't tell me enough to fully understand what your problem
is. It is correct that the ACSL manual is a reference manual, not a teaching
manual. However, simulation languages are so simple to use that you CAN learn
ACSL from the manual. Just don't start with page 1. Start with the simplest
example in the example section, try to identify the elements of the program,
and refer to the alphabetic reference section when you don't understand a
particular keyword.

As far as I know, a teaching manual for ACSL does not exist. Thus, if your
problems are indeed related to mastering the syntax of ACSL, the above outlined
approach will certainly work.

However, I suspect that what you are trying to tell us is that you have
difficulties understanding how models are constructed, what a state-space
representation of a dynamical system is, etc., i.e., that your difficulties
are NOT related to the syntax of ACSL, but rather to the underlying principles
of continuous system modeling. If this is the case, I recommend you my book:

       F.E.Cellier (1991), "Continuous System Modeling," Springer-Verlag,
       New York, 755p.

This book IS a textbook, i.e., is written for students (especially graduate
students) to learn how to model systems. It also contains many ACSL examples,
and shows how they work, but it is NOT a simple tutorial for ACSL.

                                        Best regards

			CALL FOR PARTICIPATION

ICASE Workshop on Software Tools and Techniques for
	      Performance and Reliability Estimation
			June 17-18 1993

As software and hardware systems become more complex there is an
increasing need to use software tools to understand and predict their
behavior. "Behavior" here can mean any one of a number of
things---performance, reliability, correctness are examples. This workshop
is intended to bring together researchers and users of such tools.
The focus will be on the following questions.

		1. What capabilities presently exist?
		2. What additional capabilities are needed?
		3. How can we design tools that better support
		   integrated analyses?
		4. How can we design tools that are themselves
		   integrable?

The format will a mixture of half-hour presentations, and open discussion.
Those interested in making a presentation should contact the workshop
organizers with a proposal by 15 March. By 1 April authors will
be notified of acceptance. Two-page abstracts will be due 1 June
and will be distributed at the workshop.

The workshop will be held at the Institute for Computer Applications

                           SCIENTIFIC PROGRAM
                           ------------------

The 1993 SCS European Simulation Symposium is structured around four
major themes: applications of simulation in information systems,
simulation aspects of multimedia systems and virtual reality, high-
performance computing and simulation, and new trends in simulation
methods and tools. A parallel track will be devoted to each of the four
topics.

1. DYNAMIC MODELLING AND INFORMATION SYSTEMS
Simulation is a fruitful approach for analyzing dynamic aspects
of information systems, including the behaviour of actors and
organizations employing information systems. The approach
recognizes that activities happen concurrently in organizations,
and that methods are needed to adequately model concurrency.
Dynamic modelling techniques are useful for problem solving in
production and administrative logistics. Topics include:

      - dynamic modelling of information systems
      - CAD, CAM, CIM, CIME, CAE systems
      - simulation and scheduling
      - concurrent engineering techniques

2. MULTIMEDIA SYSTEMS AND VIRTUAL REALITY
Due to the decreased prices of powerful hardware and the
introduction of specialized hardware, multimedia systems and
virtual reality are currently in the focus of attention. As
virtual reality has many aspects in common with simulation, and
as simulation output and model building can benefit highly from
multimedia technology, we are looking for papers on:

      - multimedia, hypermedia, data compression / fusion
      - virtual reality techniques and applications
      - simulation in education and training
      - simulation in entertainment and gaming

3. HIGH-PERFORMANCE COMPUTING AND SIMULATION
Much research is spent nowadays on methods, algorithms and
software for parallel and distributed hardware. There are strong
relations between simulation and parallel processing. In
large-scale, complex and real-time simulation, parallel
processing is used to increase performance. On the other hand,
simulation is useful in the analysis and evaluation of parallel
     processes. Conference topics include:

      - parallel methods in (continuous, discrete) simulation
      - software tools for simulation on parallel and distributed
          hardware
      - applications of simulation on parallel and distributed
          hardware
      - simulation of (massively) parallel processes, neural networks

4. NEW TRENDS IN METHODS AND TOOLS
More and more fields recognize the importance of simulation
nowadays. Conversely, other disciplines are being introduced into
the simulation field such as graphics and knowledge engineering.
This sets new goals for simulation methods and tools. The
integration of simulation and artificial intelligence, object
oriented analysis and design, visualisation technology, and other
fields, remain relatively unexplored. We therefore would like to
     receive papers on:

      - methods and techniques in simulation
      - (object-oriented) simulation software tools, advanced
          environments
      - DBMS, AI and neural networks in simulation
      - iconics, animation, graphics, scientific visualisation

Simulation in EC projects
 -------------------------
Sessions will be organized dealing with simulation in EC ESPRIT and
DELTA projects. These sessions will be included as separate sessions
in the above tracks.

Invited speakers
 ----------------
In each of the four tracks of the conference, an invited speaker will
give a special in-depth presentation, which will be included in the
proceedings of the conference.

Furthermore, two plenary presentations will be given by:

Henk G. Sol, Delft University of Technology, the Netherlands
Dynamic Modelling of Information Systems

Ben Delaney, Cyberedge Journal, USA
The Relation between Simulation, Virtual Reality and Multimedia
Technology

                       --------------------------

Extended abstracts of the papers (two pages typewritten without
drawings and tables) are due to arrive IN QUADRUPLICATE at the SCS
European Office BEFORE MARCH 25, 1993. Please, mention in your
abstract the novel elements in your research and its contribution to
the field of simulation.

Only original papers, written in English, which have not previously
been published elsewhere will be accepted. In case you want to
organize a panel discussion, please contact the program chairman.

Authors are expected to register early (at a reduced fee) and to
attend the conference at their own expense to present the accepted
papers. Without early registration and payment, the paper will not be
published in the Conference Proceedings.

Each abstract will be reviewed by at least three members of the
International Program Committee. The notification of acceptance or
rejection will be sent by MAY 15, 1993.

An author kit with complete instructions for preparing a camera-ready
copy for the Proceedings will be sent to authors of accepted
abstracts. The camera-ready copy of the papers must be in by AUGUST
15, 1993. In order to guarantee a high-quality conference, the full
papers will be reviewed as well, to check whether the suggestions of
the program committee have been incorporated. The nominees for the
best paper awards will then be selected as well.

The official conference language and the language of the accepted
papers is English.

                            BEST PAPER AWARDS
                            -----------------

The 1993 European Simulation Symposium will award the best four
papers, one in each of the four tracks. From these four papers, the
best overall paper of the conference will be chosen. The selection
procedure will be as follows: The Program Committee nominates the four
best papers in each track. The 16 chosen papers will be presented in
four special sessions, where the presentation of the paper and the
response to questions will be judged as well. In each track, one paper
will be chosen as best paper of that track. The awarded papers will be
published in an International Journal, if necessary after
incorporating modifications in the paper.

The Program Committee chooses the overall best paper of the conference
from these four papers. The author of the best paper will be awarded
at the conference dinner.

Introduction
============

Dynamics is an inherent characteristic of our society in general and of
organizations in particular. It is the dynamic behaviour that enables
organizations to react to changes that can originate both within the
organization itself and in the environment. It is also this dynamic
behaviour that makes it so difficult to analyze and understand problems
with respect to organizational performance.

Methods and tools are needed to grasp the dynamic aspects of an
organization in addition to its structural aspects. The ultimate
objective is to improve organizational performance. The scope may vary
from the interorganizational or corporate level (macro) via business
components and their coordination (meso) to the process level (micro).

Research to date has identified many aspects that need to be studied to
achieve better organizational performance: business structure,
organizational culture, process optimization, change management,
strategic decision making, information systems, etc., etc.. For each of
these perspectives, specific methods and tools have been developed.
Comparison, integration and testing, both conceptually and empirically,
of these perspectives and their methods and tools should ultimately lead
to a sound methodology for performance improvement of dynamic
organizations in a dynamic environment.

Subjects
========

This minitrack provides a scientific platform for comparing and
integrating both old and new ideas, methods, and tools with a strong
emphasis on dynamic aspects. Therefore, original papers are sought on one
or more of the following topics:

 - organizational problem solving
 - dynamic enterprise modelling
 - administrative logistics
 - process, business, and corporate re-engineering
 - workflow management
 - interorganizational coordination, such as production or transportation
    chain logistics
 - dynamics in information systems development
 - transferring models for design into actual implementations
 - coping with resistance to organizational change
 - transferring models for design into training instruments
 - methodological aspects of modelling dynamics
 - diagramming techniques to capture time-related aspects
 - support tools for any of the phases in organizational problem solving
    (problem identification, conceptualization, specification, analysis,
validation, diagnosis, solution finding, analysis and choice,
    implementation, evaluation).
